But you have to have your bike serviced with them. This is where they make their money.
If you factor in BMW Warranty at about £320 / year that's probably a really decent deal.

I guess if you want peace of mind, its not bad..... But they're still making good money out of it with the servicing, in fact servicing prices at main dealers are a rip off afaic. I like to service my bikes myself once they're out of warranty. Even in warranty i save loads by using independants, so i've not gone for Bridge's offer.
Also with extended warranties, there are always loads of little get out clauses in them, to give them an excuse to refuse work should they so want. Always carefully read the small print.

I know you could have fixed it cheaper if it wasn't under warranty, but for me it's already paid for itself for the next year or two. And the reality for me is that if something big did go wrong I don't have the money to pay for it. But I can afford £28 a month.
I'm just curious why exhaust flaps are prone to sticking. Is it caused by a poor maintenance schedule from BMW? I know with my Triumph when I used to get it dealer serviced the suspension linkages were never looked at but now I do my own servicing I'll pull them out every year and grease them up.
I believe the exhaust valves stick because the pulley is tucked away under a cover and never gets cleaned or lubed, so seizes. My bike was an ex training school bike so it's a bit more common on them. If you didn't have the warranty then I gather you can free them off or replace the headers and the valve with an aftermarket system.

It was Motorrad Central Scotland just out of Edinburgh who instigated the replacement. I was up there visiting and they said it'd be a warranty job. Wollastons in Northampton carried out and so far I have to say the BM dealers I've used have been happy to do warranty work.

I'm not also certain you have to have the bike serviced at a main dealer to keep up the extended warranty. I think you can have it done elsewhere, but from what I gather a lot of warranty work is discretionary, so if you've built up a good relationship with a dealer then they're happy to help you out. If you rock up out of the blue with a non main dealer service history and ask for some help on a vague warranty claim, that's when you might come unstuck.

I pay about £220 for a 6000 mile main dealer and a bit more for the 12000. It's not cheap but for convenience I've just stuck with it.

Hate to imagine how much the engine replacements are costing BM though with corrosion issues on the 1200. New engines fitted and old ones scrapped, just for paint lifting off the cases. Crazy.

Part of the T&C's says...

What must I do to keep the
Warranty valid?
The terms and conditions of the
warranty listed below must be adhered
to. Failure to do so will result in the
rejection of a claim or the termination
of your BMW Motorrad Insured
Warranty. This does not affect your
statutory rights.
1. When servicing your motorcycle,
failure to comply with the service
schedule recommended by BMW may
invalidate this warranty. All service and
warranty work must be carried out by
an Authorised BMW Dealer or BMW
Service Authorised Workshop using
only Genuine BMW Parts. Your BMW
Service Booklet should be stamped,
dated and detailed with the correct
mileage at the time of service by the
servicing dealer.

When I've talked to them about that very point they've been far more vague. Again, down to the relationship you have with the dealer I think, though perhaps best not to chance it. To me it makes some sense to have the bike serviced with the people who will initiate and conduct the warranty work anyway.

BMW's extended warranty is basically an insurance policy, it clearly states in black & white in the t&c's what the conditions of that insurance policy is. We all know how insurance works, if they can legally get out of paying up, they sure as hell will.

Its only for the standard warranty, that you are well within your rights to have your bike serviced at an independant.
This is due to the EU directive.... it doesn't apply to extended warranties.

Yes, and what a dealer will put through as warranty work is often at their discretion. Nothing seems black and white when it comes to warranties. Goodwill gestures are just that, and I gather BMW aren't loathe to use them if you're on good terms with the dealer. They fitted new pads and rear disc to mine at 5000 miles even though consumables because of just that; good will. And from the discussions I've had it seems just as applicable to extended warranty claims as it does the original 2 year period. If you're a dick to them they'll say no. If you get on okay they'll try and slip it through the back door. But yes, you're right, ultimately, in black and white, if you have it serviced at a main dealer you're covered. Unless it's engine corrosion, which I gather extended warranty doesn't cover.
