Is it worth taking out an extended warranty?

Depends on how many miles your bike has now and how many more you will be doing.

Exhaust flap, switch gear, fuel strip and possibly bevel box bearing are all things to keep an eye on.
Tot up the cost of each one of these to repair/replace against the cost of extended warranty.

Pease of mind is also to be factored in.

I'd have thought it depends on whether you're a worrier who expects problems with their bike or not.Some people like to cover everything with insurance while I don't even have contents insurance for my house.
As Coyotedave said the cost of a repair might be more than the cost of the warranty but what are the chances of needing a repair? BMW wouldn't offer an extended warranty if they were losing money on it.

I'm on the other side of that fence.

Spending £20 / month on the warranty keeps me worry free. Thinking that an esa shock would hit me for £1400+ makes me want to spend £20 :S

I took out extended warranty on my LC GS, about £28 a month. Just had new headers, cables and motor due to the exhaust flap sticking. It was about a £1800 bill that cost me the £100 excess.

I know you could have fixed it cheaper if it wasn't under warranty, but for me it's already paid for itself for the next year or two. And the reality for me is that if something big did go wrong I don't have the money to pay for it. But I can afford £28 a month.

With extended warranty, you have to factor in the extra cost of having to have main dealer servicing.

I'm just curious why exhaust flaps are prone to sticking.Is it caused by a poor maintenance schedule from BMW? I know with my Triumph when I used to get it dealer serviced the suspension linkages were never looked at but now I do my own servicing I'll pull them out every year and grease them up.

I bought my current bike from Bridge, Exeter. They do free lifetime warranty on all their new bikes.
But you have to have your bike serviced with them. This is where they make their money.

The EU directive that a vehicle can be serviced anywhere and still keep your warranty as long as the schedule is adhered to and genuine parts are used, only applies to the standard 2 or 3 yr warranty.
Extended warranties are different and they can make whatever conditions they like, hence why they tie you in to servicing with them.
