It's a fantastic country to visit by bike or by foot. We back-packed but also hired Honda Step-thrus for excursions to temples and war sites.

Watch out for locals drying chillies on the road as you come around corners!

My mate did an organised trip up in the North (mountainous region). This would normally be ideal but he caught some of the worst storms and mud-slides for years and they struggled a bit. If they had left one of the villages a few hours later, they wpould have all been killed and even then, they had to rescue their own guide whose bike was washed away from under him.

Don't let that little anecdote put you off, though

I did a little bit of touring on a Honda 125cc with a white basket on the front about 12 years ago! Hired it in Hue while on a backpacking trip from the south to north and did some scouting about the place. Very cool. Wonder if I can dig out a photo. Hmmm.

Not a massive fan of Top Gear (too contrived these days) but their Vietnam special gives a fairly good feel for the place.

Brilliant country.

GREAT people, great food, great countryside ... Go!! :)
