I have had a day farkling!

Post by Paul »

A week or so ago I read a thread where a guy had made a rack for his bike, I wrote on that thread that I would like to make something similar for my Varadero. The trouble with my bike is that it's diffucult to strap stuff on the back when going on my travels. Honda decided in my opinion that style was more important that practical anchor points and when I go away I have straps and bungees going in all directions.

So I spent a day in the shed today and invented the Aluminiumrackextentionator!

I used, a peice of aluminium, donated by my mate.
4 rubber grommets, found in my bits and bobs box
4 Bolts, bought :(

The hardest part was bending the edges neatly, I used a peice of angle iron and a mallet, another difficult bit was making the slots for the straps, drilled a hole each end and used a rat-tailed file, then a flat file.
I used the rubber grommets to stop the rack scratching the bike.

This is what I made!

Nice job mate! Got to be better than spending a fortune buying one. And you had fun making it too!

I'm lucky in that at work we have metal bending machines, pillar drills etc. You did a great job with the edges, looks better than a bought rack, more hard core lol...

Good job Paul - just watch those edges don't cut through your straps

Nice work, I did a similar thing with exactly the same stuff to make a 2 litre fuel can holder, bit of scrap ally and saved myself about 50 quid.
Yours looks good and seems to work a treat.
I'll post a picture of my effort when I find it.

Thanks guy's, this is the first time that I have had a go at anything like this, mainly because I havn't got the right tools for metalworking.
I have smoothed all of the edges as much as possible but will keep an eye on fraying straps, cheers!
