my vf1000
this is my vf1000,its a 1986 ff model with 29k on the clock from new.i reckon its in fantastic condition for its age.at the moment its off the road a] cos i cant afford to tax it,still outa work. b]cos i want to change all the seals in the brake callipers and give it a good going over with it being stood for quite a while, better safe than sorry eh! that too costs money i aint got at the mo so shes sat in the garage waiting patiently.i reckon shes a keeper for me.i still want a varadero again but thats just a dream for now.what i can afford to do tho today is go and fit the set of krauser panniers and top box that i have.the boredom of so far 8mths outa work and not a penny to spend on anything is really getting to me now, anyway i hope somebody likes the pic!

She is a beauty,I had the Bol'd'or version and did thousands of miles on her thru Europe. Soft cams was a prob with them, just keep changing the oil loads. I wired the fan to come on with a manual switch as it does'nt cut in till its almost too late. Lovely bikes. B)

Re: my vf1000
I thought that a special tool was needed when setting the camshaft which, if it wasn't used, meant that the shaft didn't run straight and that's why they broke. This bike is the reason that Honda created the VFR and spent so many years with gear-driven cams.herman wrote:Soft cams was a prob with them, just keep changing the oil loads.
Nonetheless, it's a gorgeous bike B)

Lovely bike, looks brand new, thanks for posting the pic. A mate of mine had the vf1000r, i remember this range of bikes was mega expensive when they came out so not alot about now. Wasnt it the vf750 s that had the cam probs!!!.

Aha - you could be right, I thought that both the 750 and 1000 engines had the cam problem but now you come to mention it, I think it was just the 750s.garyr wrote:Wasnt it the vf750 s that had the cam probs!!!.

Re: my vf1000
The early 750s were a bit self destructive but the 1000 just had soft lobes which could be cured with re-profiling them or prevented with frequent oil changes. The legendary vfr 750 with gear driven cams followed which I replaced the Bol with.

I must say that your bike is what the is commonly known as "mint". It could hardly have been in better conditio when it was new.
Regarding the want of a Varadero - I can understand your situation. I too have been "sans job" from time to time. Not sure if you can stretch any budget this far but there is a cheap 2007 Vara on ebay (albeit with highish mileage).

What a minter, made in an era when Honda led the way in innovation!
I had a VF750 when I was 20, just couldn't afford the Norwich Union UNLIMITED rider policy at the time, else would have had the thou!
Don't know what has happened to the Big H in recent times . . seem to have lost their way?
