Greetings Miki,

I have always known them to be used as an anti squeal shim although some claim that they were also used as a heat shield too. The Serow uses the same dish plus an extra smaller pad underneath, neither shown on parts manuals so far as I can find.

In the 'good old days' folk used to coat such items with Copperslip grease which they also applied to securing/anti rattle pins but nowadays such seems not recommended as it is claimed that the copper can interfere with ABS type sensors and contribute to galvanic corrosion. Silicon based products seem to be more widely used but which ever you choose to use do not let it contaminate the pad friction material. I used Pagid Ceratec anti-squeal lubricant.

I recently had to replace the rear brake piston of my Serow, original replacement no longer available so I bought a stainless steel product online which certainly measured to the same dimensions and fitted perfectly. The piston was supplied by a company on eBay called Powerhouse and excellent service. The seal kit from https://www.tytrials.com again excellent service. I did not refit the shim washer and have had no problems in use so far.

TTFN

Hugh.
