Why don't the majority of bikes have them?
I had a large capacity, twin cylinder American motorcycle once, it didn't have much in the way of technical innovation or creature comforts, but it had self cancelling indicators.
I think I've had another bike with them, but I could be mistaken.
Can you imagine the Carnage if the Zombies on four wheels had to cancel their indicators manually?

Re: Self cancelling indicators
Considering the fact that quite a lot of them don't bother ,especially at roundabouts, nothing would change Steve. B)SteveW wrote:Why don't the majority of bikes have them?

Re: Self cancelling indicators
I'm pretty sure Yamaha put self cancelling indicators on some of their bikes in the '70s and I've had a BMW with them but I can't remember which one it was. Old age has crept in just that bit too much and my memory only lasts a certain number of sleeps these days
Re: Self cancelling indicators
I attached a buzzer to the indicators it is so annoying it works better than auto cancelling.
Re: Re: Self cancelling indicators
They did indeed, I had them on a new RD250 in 1976, i think Honda also had a dabble at the time. The Yam ones used a combination of timer and distance travelled to calculate when to switch off. They worked!AndyB wrote:I'm pretty sure Yamaha put self cancelling indicators on some of their bikes in the '70s and I've had a BMW with them but I can't remember which one it was. Re: Self cancelling indicators
Most BMW's have them fitted and they self cancel for lane changing.
So if you're on a motorway and signal to swap lanes, they will self cancel after about 5-10 flashes, depending on what setting they are on (this can be changed or the feature removed at a dealer).
It doesn't work at low speed so no fear of them staying on at junctions/roundabouts.
I never use it though as I'm constantly pressing the indicator cancel button (one of my mad crazy habits!) to ensure I'm not riding about with various lights flashing!

Re: Re: Self cancelling indicators
I've got a vague memory that the Yamaha ones had an audible warning as well but that was highlighted as being a potential hazard because it sounded similar to the noise made at a pelican crossing when it's safe to go and the safety brigade thought a deaf person might step out thinking it was safe to do so. Yeah right, they can hear that but they can't hear a pair of Allspeeds on a 2 stroke with a 17 year old keeping the revs up to impress school girls

Re: Self cancelling indicators
My GSA has self cancelling indicators, they're a pain in the arse!
They cancel on a time/speed/distance thing, if I'm coming off of a motorways etc and signal at the 300 meter marker while travelling at 70mph, they cancel just before the junction.
I'd prefer not to have them as my memory is a bit longer than a goldfish' and if I have turned them on, I don't forget to cancel them.

Re: Re: Self cancelling indicators
Me being thick.....Does my 2012 GSA have them then? I'd never know because I am programmed to always cancel them. Plus, if I forgot to cancel them and they self cancelled, I'd have forgot I'd left them on, so I wouldn't realised if they had self cancelled.....Phew!
