Alternatives to Matches.
Alternatives to Matches.
In my relentless search to cut down the amount of crap I carry on camping trips, I have ditched my butane stove (canisters too bulky) and bought a little solid fuel stove 5"x 4"x 1.25" for a fiver from go outdoors. It uses little solid fuel tablets. Now, not being a smoker I don't own a lighter and know nowt about them. But I fancy a Zippo. My question is can I put petrol in it? I don't want to carry round lighter fuel, but with a syringe I can get petrol from my tank.
Re: Alternatives to Matches.
Sounds like you'll be carrying more stuff than before, yes you can put petrol in it. I think you'll go back to your old stove. The solid fuel tablet ones aren't great especially if it's windy
Re: Alternatives to Matches.
Cheers, I'll get a zippo (always fancied one anyway) the solid fuel stove is small, and a great shape to pack, fits inside my mess tin. Take your point about wind, tested it today, and I think it needs to be sheltered if windy.

Yes they run on petrol, you just pull it in half and dip it in your tank. Get a pukka zippo not an imitation, they're pants.
You may regret using solid fuel tablets over butane, personally I wouldn't bother. Speed, cleanliness, fuss, temp control, smell etc etc

+1 with KTMBLAG
I stopped using a solid fuel burner years ago.... uncontrollable, flame is not that strong in real terms - but can look impressive, in wind the flame goes all over the place, fuel tablets can be hard to find.
Lighter....
Yes you can put petrol in Zippo lighters, but it does evaporate quite easily. Just buy a 75p lighter from the newsagent!
