Super Tenere recall??

Post by djl50 »

Just read this on S10 owners not sure if it is legitimate or not.

Super Tenere recall UK

Have been having an intermittent headlamp problem for a little while now. Took to Yam dealer Friday to try and get it fixed under warranty only to be told that they have had a recall notice in the last few days to fit the new improved harness to all super Tens and R1.

I take it this includes 2013 models and what year R1 does it affect.

I have a 2011 Super Ten and must ask the dealer when I see him next week about this recall.
Seems a bit extreme replacing the wiring harness, hope that it is not a fire hazard.

They didn't bother doing an official recall for the reg/rec problem on the 660 Tenere but if this is an official one you'll be contacted by Yamaha. I'd ignore any rumours until you get the letter and if it's life threatening you can die knowing your family will do ok out of it and you'll be the subject of endless discussions on Internet forums

I spoke to a S10 owner at the weekend. He also said that his headlight kept blowing. When he called Yamaha they told him there has been a recall anyway to replace the wiring loom for the lights with a heavier duty version.

Yamaha (along with others) have 3 levels for rectifying factory faults:

1) This could hurt someone, get it in and fix it before we get sued.

2) This could cost us a lot of money to fix later. Get it fixed next service but if they miss the service we're off the hook.

3) If they complain and appear to know we've got a problem then fix it but make them work for it rather than tell them we know it's an issue.

No factory has done a recall for peeling stickers :)

It's not the full wiring harness, just the bit that distributes the power to the headlight assembly.

It looks genuine. I have seen the official USA recall posted in the last couple of days.

They rate is as dangerous as the lights can fail. Not too much of a problem during the day in the high street. Big problem at night on back roads.

They should notify owners. They did with the last one regarding the weak rear rack shortly after the bike was introduced.
but I am sure it will. Here is the previous one to give an idea of the system:
VOSA recals
It has not yet been published in the UK

In reality, the spade connectors that attach to the bulb are not beefy enough and can overheat and melt the plastic cover or heat the spade connector till it bends open and make a bad connection usually resulting in blowing the headlight.

Its a 10 minute fix involving pulling the headlights out and removing the RH cover to access the connector plug.

This is the US recall notice. Bear in mind they have not had the S10 as long as us:

Report Receipt Date: FEB 10, 2014
NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V044000
Component(s):
All Products Associated with this Recall expand
Details close
7 Associated Documents expand
Manufacturer: Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA
SUMMARY:
Yamaha Motor Corporation USA (Yamaha) is recalling certain model year 2009-2013 YZFR1 motorcycles manufactured October 2008 through August 2013 and 2012-2013 XTZ12 motorcycles manufactured October 2011 through August 2013. In the affected motorcycles, use of the headlight may generate enough heat to cause the bulb connections to expand, resulting in arcing in the headlight bulb socket which could cause the socket to overheat, melt and cause the headlight to malfunction.
CONSEQUENCE:
A headlight failure reduces the rider's ability to see clearly and the motorcycle's visibility to oncoming traffic, increasing the risk of a crash.
REMEDY:
Yamaha will notify owners and dealers will replace the headlight socket, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in February 2014. Owners may contact Yamaha at 1-800-962-7926.
NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
