While I have been laying/sitting here recovering from my accident with the possibility of not being strong enough to manage the GS on-off road I have been thinking how light can you go with bike and equipment?
Now I realise the weather of where you are travelling too has a bearing on what you take, but this is ABR so lets presume we are camping.
I have been looking at tarps instead of tents, does anyone do that?
Do you have some lightweight kit you just can't leave home without?
I know taking less is the best option but come on, who can resist titanium?

I haven't actually weighed my kit  I just go on what the manufacturers say, my sleeping bag is 1.9kg and the tent is 4kg, not sure about cooking gear etc.

A word of warning about using a tarp, I met 2 German lads walking in Scotland using a tarp instead of a tent last summer but the Scottish midgie ate them alive, the poor lads were nearly in tears.

yep..I carry a basha only to stop the rain or sun when I`m mending a puncture..a tent offers a comfy place closed off..a tarp is open to everything ..Andysr6 wrote:A word of warning about using a tarp, I met 2 German lads walking in Scotland using a tarp instead of a tent last summer but the Scottish midgie ate them alive, the poor lads were nearly in tears.

If it were me I'd go on a diet and lose 10-20kg, but I've got it to loose, and look at a lighter bike. Your only going to save a few kilos by trimming back luggage and will that really make any difference?

Good point Ralph
I was just trying to get an idea of good lightweight kit, I love my trangia but its bulky and not that light once you've added the fuel, were if you used say a petrol burner you could lose the extra fuel case, thats the kinda thing I was getting at.

Currently contemplating a long cycle tour. Kind of puts the 4kg tent in perspective, I'm searching 1kg.... ADV biking is too easy!!!
