20,000 km's on a CCM GP450

There's always 2 sides to an argument & although worrying I can kind of see why CCM aren't playing ball.

Allegedly they crashed their bikes on an enduro park in Switzerland before setting off, seriously enough to both end up in A&E. Couple that with hanging a load of bags off the front cowling, would any manufacturer honour?

If you take a look at the sprocket it's absolutely knackered & more like a ninja star. I too would argue poor maintenance.

Always sad to hear someone having bike trouble, no matter the reason

I've just checked out the photographs on their website.

Yes, they have loaded the bikes significantly and even welded extra sections on to the pannier rails which suggests these were pushed beyond their design brief. I'm also a bit confused by their comment that the seat covers are not waterproof because they re-foamed and re-upholstered theirs locally, in preparation for the trip.

Maybe something has been lost in translation but that sprocket picture says a lot IMHO. I think it's a real shame that they had a bad experience but I'm beginning to think it could have easily happened on any other bike.

The sprocket looks awful and maybe speaks to the level of concern for maintenance they had. OTOH, when I travelled Ruta 40 10 years ago on a rented F650 GS, the owners of the bike didn't want me to lube the chain. They reckoned that the abrasive stuff any oil/wax lube encouraged it to pick up wore the chain out faster than just leaving it as it came. I think they reckoned to get about 10K miles from the chain before slinging on a new one.

The Trans Americas guys have had to skip the Darien Gap as they were refused permissions.

They do seem to be having problems with spoke breakages but don't mention other issues. Of note is their statement that they have done 2000km off tar - not alot really.

I know I should have gone the bookyes is would have been easy money that they didn't do a Darien crossing. I nobody gets official permission but it won't stop you if your serious . But then a couple of hours research would have told them that. A cheap cop out I think

Sprocket bolts are a bit of an issue with lumpy singles, especially those without a cush drive ( not sure if CCM have those). On my KTM 450 EXC unless they where thread-locked with decent glue and torqued up properly they would come loose, you are technically supposed to junk them after you've used them as well. I got so bored with it I lock wired them in the end. It seems like the guys in the article maybe got the wrong bikes.

from what I've read so far, it resembles me two friends I have, whom were riding roads bikes all their life, and decided to get a pair of dirt bikes, sit down on them and off they go to the adventure like nothing changed. Single cylinder bikes being bashed offroad need a completely different mindset, with looking after and general preventative maintenance. those warranty claims of broken bits are especially ridiculous. you want a lightweight bike and then complain when something brakes after riding it into a wall :S
