Cushion flooring over floorboards?

Post by MikeC »

Hello lads, following the removal of old ceramic tiles I need to put some vinyl cushion flooring over old floorboards, in our bathroom. Due to the poor state of the floorboards I presume I need a liner of some type, such as 6mm ply?

Anyone with the relevant experience advise please?

Yes you will need a plywood layer under the new flooring. At least a 6mm but if the floor is anyway bad a 12mm ply layer is better. WBP or marine specification won't self destruct if you do get a leak or water spill.

When you have it down go around the edges with mastic and seal them. do the same with the cushion vinyl to spills don't get underneath.

Screw fix it at about 150mm pre Brexit and 6" post Brexit centres along the joints and in rows no more than 12" apart. Don't use screws longer than the combined thickness of plywood and floor boards in case of pipes/wires in the void. Maybe a 35mm screw tops, countersink them in and fill the screw holes so you don't see them through the floor. Fill the joints in the plywood. It should all be nice and smooth before laying the vinyl. Isopon is a good bet, don't be tempted to use Polyfilla type filler as it will break up. Also, if you find a joint in the plywood happening over a joint in the floor boards trim the sheet a small bit to make it happen over the centre of the board.

Depending on the size of the bathroom watch where you position the joints. It's lots of screwing but a Pozi bit in an electric drill run slowly will save the arms and wrists. The ideal is to screw along the lines of the joists under but you still need to be careful of pipes or wires under unless you know for certain there are none notched into the tops of the timber joist supports.

When you are putting down the flooring roll it out and leave it a few days before cutting and fitting it.

Floor layers always vacuum an area before laying vinyl flooring. If you don't the reason will be obvious afterwards........

Also strongly recommend take out the ware and run the new floor under all the ware.

Hint, when screwing ply into the floor boards, don't screw through into a water pipe! :woohoo:
