it wasnt any bother ..but i have a fleet policy for work .and they are pretty good ..they never bothered when the ccm was fully uncorked either
i dont think any one would notice the difference tbo
been testing a bit more and found the bike pulled really well until around 6500 revs and sluggish acceleration from there ...
cause was the airbox being too restrictive ..it wasalready de snorkled .. but a quick run with side panel off confirmed the airflow was insufficiant ..ive fitted some uni filters to the box but steered away from the sidepanels and squezzed four in the top ..made a bit of a bow wave protector from polymorth ...the old filter was servicable but probab;y getting ready for replacment so ive ordered a kand n so i think that should sort it ..

ive decided to reinstate the lamda sensor as from what im reading it does effect feuling up to 85 percent throttle openings im guessing then its governed by a rich map by the ecu ..but if anyone knows for sure thats cool
i tapped in to the manifold like the crf the cast is there it just needed careful drilling
i took it out testing yesterday a proper braaap 180 miles about 70 motorway and around 7 hours off road ..the diffrence with the airflow is obviously much better at higher revs and the bike will cruise easily at 70mph .it really does run sweet now ..top speed was 84mph gps but it was wet and the bike is pretty unstable over 80mph with me big screen on ..but it would i think hit 90 if asked ..but extreamly happy with its ability to cruise t 70 with pleanty left
economy ... 158 miles for 11 lirtres but it was mostly motorway and then off road so thats not bad
on the motorway and on the trail temperature seemed to keep well with ints limits around 120 deg on motorway and the fan activates off road and all seems good
gearing ...im on 15/39 and its pretty good on the road keeps the revs nice and reasonable at 65/70mph ...off road it did pretty well the lakes has some pretty knarly steep stuff so i wanted to go there to test it our properly and although here and there it was a ltlle tall for the rocks steps and stuff it did a pretty good job of gutsing up ..the extra tourque deffo allows the bike to be geared quite raducally higher ..the 250l would braap up allthese trails easy enough but needed a 13/40 or 14/43 ..
2nd gear on the 300 is much much beter it will climb pretty well and pull where the 250s was usless
it should really have had a one less front on but im after duel sport gearing and all in all it did pretty dam well
anyway thats it i think ...i may just have it dynoed for 25 quid just to cjeck the a/f is correct ..im quite happy with the stock engine ..the bike does pretty well and i think it will be a great little adveture tourer ..i find it a good little off road bike ...ill be pointing it towards albania in april

I've been having a look at this thread from time to time.
I know Minky gets pleasure from tinkering.....and a lot of us have got a bit carried away to some extent farkling and modifying (in my case a DRZ 400 and a 450 exc) our bikes.
No doubt he's ended up with a rather special CRF250L. He seems to have turned the humble Honda into something'that's getting close to a CCM GP450......a bike he also owns!
I understand where he's coming from, once you start it's hard to stop!
Of course no doubt he bought the Honda to run along side his other bikes as a cheap, simple trail bike, that he could play about on and drop on the trails without any expensive damage. But that's far too rational.
It just starts with a simple modification, then becomes addictive.
Well done Steve......are you sure you'll stop after the Dyno?
So my clutch kit arrived today , it was bike specific for Crf which is EBC : DRC 277 and comes in at £70 all in , as such it comes with one bigger dia friction plate to accommodate the judder spring as described by Minky, as it also contained hd springs and steel plates I bought this and also the set minky recommended , so EBC : CK 1313 which is for cbr , this'll allow me to do both jaynes and mine , so I'd already pulled the side case etc off awaiting bits , the gasket was ok and I have some Ducati sealant anyway from a sprag clutch I did so will prob stick a cover of that on , for info these are the photos of different plates and springs , the springs are a bit bigger and heavier , I'll try on mine first before jaynes , the steel plates have indentations on as opposed to the smooth originals , I presume for extra friction ? For info of all , if you buy direct from ebc and are affiliated to any clubs they generally give you discount , so pics below of differing springs / steel plate / the friction plate is similar to orig maybe thicker but hard to establish as mines got 3000 miles on .

theres a lot of truth in that steve ..but ive always liked the little crf from the moment i tried it ..it didnt take me long to decide there was a potentially good little adv bike in it and the longer ive had it and the more ive ridden it the more convinced ive been ..whatever ive thrown at it its either done it or had a bloody good try at it and it so easy to manage when i cock it all up
ill be right interested in your opinion when we go out steve ..its got shitloads of low tourque but is actually a lot more calm than me old drz ever was on the motorway ,,if i geared me drz down for off road it was reving its tits off at 60mph ..the gearspread on this is now much better at both ends of the scale its like a softer dumbed down drz engine with a better 1st gear and a 6th gear bolted on the end ...it will just tractor up anything low down and sit at 70mph all day long (thumbs)
dyno run is cheap ..i just want the a/f checking and make sure its as it should be with the oped airbox ..not wanteing to have it anything but standard and keep those huge service intervals
Further prep for oncoming trips close to home and afield , . So the saddle bag frames are a copy of crofty's, the welding held up well in my recent slide on the snow , the heat shield is adapted from an old one I had and a bit of ally bracket I made , when I put original exhaust on for longer trip i.e. Morocco the frames and plastics will take up a bit of that space , the bags I found were , for quick spins Giant loop mojave , not badly priced and tough , available from adv spec , the bigger ones for Morocco are Shad , Spanish brand bought via France , roll top fasteners , decent price ( around 70£ , they look bigger in pic than they are , I've upgraded jaynes clutch for the EBC ones and we will prob lose the moose tail packs as we have roll bags from climbing and going to fit a rotopax on each for extra fuel
WTF is it with honda. Even when they have the parts in the factory they still won't give what the customer wants like the old xr 400 it was a good bike but would have been great if they fitted the parts they already had so it was electric start. Everyone that showed interest on all the forums said they would like the rally but want more than 250 so what did they do . People like the crf L but would like a bit more go that the 250 motor offers but I'd bet they never sell the bike that minky just built
