I've known some sites lock the boxes that contain the power hook ups, Sao Martinho do Porto was one I remember. But that's easily bypassed because the gap at the bottom where the cables come out was so large, or with the aid of a utility key. The only real note to remember if connecting stealthily is that most touring camp sites patrol the site at breakfast time and early evening to do an "inventory" of who's on site (No of people), what vehicles are on site, what size tent your using, so they can charge accordingly as they charge per person, per vehicle, what size tent s/m/l, and who is using power. So if you where to hook up your cable in the evening after they've been round, this will allow you to have power/light when it gets dark, allowing you and your chums to sit around late into the night drinking beer etc. Just remember to unplug it before going to bed, or in the morning before they come around again

How much do these campsites charge for an electrical hook up?

We pay somewhere around £10 per night if we take our trailer tent away but that seems fair because of the amount of rubbish we run off the mains and it charges the leisure battery but if that's a standard charge a week away from home paying that would buy a fairly good solar charger that would charge up even in cloudy weather and can be taped in a plastic bag on top of a top box or pannier so it's charging all day.

I wouldn't steal power because all that does is give bikers a bad name if they get caught and makes life a little bit tougher for the rest.

In euroland I've only ever paid €1-€2 per night for electric, in NI it was a coin meter taking £1 coins but that lasted all night. Power usage is minimal unless your needing to charge gopro's laptops etc, however despite there supposedly being a standard connection at campsites I've encountered multiple scenarios of plug/socket combos. So a couple of misc plugs (shucko and blue plug) & a screwdriver along with my fly lead in my tent bag leaves me able to have power. I've never needed to steal power, but for what I've seen it's so easy to do.
