Recommend a rugged tablet for GPS navigation ?

Post by WesleyDRZ400 »

Looking for a good rugged tablet PC / GPS navigation unit

Maybe something like this

http://extreme-smartphone.com/waterproo ... e-sat-nav/

I never got on with my garmin montana 600 so got rid of it, looking for a tablet to give me a digital map style display but with standard road display also

Anyone has any recommendations?

Have a look at the Panasonic Tuffbook range.
Rugged but not cheap; sometimes used/refurbished ones are resold on ebay if the public utilities are upgrading their IT stock. The emergency services and military use them so that is testament to their robustness.

I have the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active. It's the waterproof/dustproof/shockproof one. It comes with a rubberised case and a stylus too. I got the wifi and LTE one which means it's a proper phone as well with sim card if you want it to be.

To hold it I got a brodit locking mount (Ram mount compatible)

I have not used it yet for a few reasons though

1) Undecided on what nav program to use, Here Maps, Waze, Google Maps etc for normal stuff or Locus, OSMand etc for off the beaten track.

2) It's heavy, and with the mount on the bike it'll need more than just a RAM arm to keep it in the same place

3) It's massive so I need to find somewhere to put it so I can still see my speedo etc.

It's this one:

With this mount:

There are a load of reviews of it on youtube and the web, here's one though:

My mate uses a tablet but like Daniel says it's pretty heavy and multiplied by the length and vibration of the arm so it needs the 2.25 inch RAM ball to keep it locked steady.

Daniel is it possible to take a photo of your Samsung Galaxy Tab mounted on your bike, i really think this will be to big for my bike

PaulinBont i looked at the Panasonic Tuffbook range and there is some good deals on ebay but so will keep an eye out

Does anyone have the GPS of the link on posted ?

Rugged navigation X-Map 4000 / Rugged navigation X-Map 5000.

Just a thought but you could always mount it in the top clear section of a tank bag if vibration and size is an issue

Yes idea is good but i would really prefer something that is hard fix i can take of each night and also will be running/charging of the bikes power when riding. Yes sure i could do this with it on a tank bag but would prefer it fixed on the bracket i fitted to my bike as also would be in a great position there

Hope this will work Wes as unfortunately my bike isn't at home at the moment. But here's a pic of one on an x-challenge. I have the Samsung in front of me here and can measure it for you if you like?

It's from the comments on this Facebook post by Walter Colebatch where people also mention other solutions, one looks like yours?

Thanks Daniel

Get info! if you could measure the width and height with the BRODIT mount fitted that would be great.

Also does the mount hold it very secure as for very bumpy routes i am worried it could bend/break the charging pins on the mount ?
