how about then putting tenere on diet? you can easily go below 200kg.
I was thinking abut it too but not sure if I want modify bike still on warranty,
probably not easy to sell later on as well.

I trail ride my tenere and never fill the tank full, the dry weight is around the same on the other xt 660 models, the fuel capacity doesn't have to be used :)
the exhaust and wheels weigh loads but the top heavy 23 litre fuel tank is the biggest problem so don't fill it unless your not trail riding, the fuel gauge is crap, you will do a days trail riding on reserve, loosing the exhaust is a good start, and the wheels are a bit heavy too, I sold my 1st one and got a 690, that love affair lasted 6 weeks :laugh: sold it
and got another tenere, I now have a perfect ten which stands me at 4 grand, she's still lardy but better at cruising on motorways than a lightweight, and carries luggage like no other similar bike on the market can, can even take a passenger witch you can't do comfortably on the other bikes mentioned, it is what it is.

It's a lot lighter full stop. The Tenere is (allegedly) 206kg wet, the 660R 181kg. Take off the ridiculous exhaust and I think you can drop another 8kg by using the metal mule 2 into 1. So over 30kg weight saving; more than a bag of spuds!
Its got a bigger fuel capacity, its not compulsory to fill it (thumbs)

I don't agree fuel gauge is a crap, to me is one of the safest and thought through solution.
When mine kicks in, I have still left over 6 liters and automatic switch to counting kilometers
on reserve is awesome. I agree though you don't have to fill it full all the time, when I go offroad I have no more then regular dirt bike have, around 7 liters. That gives me ~12 kg less of wet weight.

p.s.
you sold 690 after 6 weeks??? that was quick B)

Thanks for the advice lads but it's to late she's off to Northern Ireland this afternoon to new home just didn't feel the love, might regret it but can always get another one if I move house and get a garage haha. I actually thought it was quite good off road the extra weight kept it planted but some reason I prefer the twitchyness of a lighter bike.

I never filled it up so never felt the full Wieght

Your and many more's answer may well be the rumoured new XT700 Tenere which we may see next year (fingers crossed). 30hp more than your (and my) Tenere, and could well be lighter too. (It will have the lovely 700cc Yamaha twin i.e. much smoother). I do find my Tenere much easier to move when you have the tank with only half or less fuel. 22 Litres up high is a lot of weight! Changing your pipe to single back can save you 7 pounds (of nasty high up and far back weight) and give you more power. Hope this helps.

I also struggled with the weight of my 660 Tenere when I was off-road, so I sold it. At the time I also had my 450 EXC-R and getting on the Tenere on the dirt felt something like driving a bus after jumping out of a hot-hatch :ohmy: . Anyway, I know the 660 Tenere is a great bike than can take you around the world but why do they make it so heavy? Apparently a lot of riders prefer the XT660R but I don't see many of those out and about which always makes me wonder why?
