Needed something to do.

Post by EricKTM@ »

Well with a cold start to the day at 07:30 this mornin (18/03/16) I kicked off the 2016 photo rally. Just wanted to spend some time on the bike that wasn't work related. So did a nice relaxed day of it gettin 12 (Carlow) 11 (Waterford) and 9 (Dublin). Was meant to get 10 (Wicklow) to but missed the turn and decided not to turn back but to get it another day. I stopped off at AMI in Gorey to and had myself a nice Coffee and checked out what my next boots and helmet are going to be.
Icey fog caused my gloves shoulders, arms and knees to ice over. Had to stop as the visor was icing over so a coffee was had.

Eventually climbed out of the fog to 12 and sun shine. But it was short lived as I lost hight again heading for 11 but after another 40 minutes approx it cleared.

Yesterday was a bloody cold day, I was glad of my heated grips on my way to work. You weren't tempted to trade in your 990 in Overlanders/AMI for a nice new 1290? Great shop that, costs me a fortune every time I stop there...

No the 950 will stay put for now. I did have a good look at the BMW F800 adv they had there though but my main reason for stopping in was to check out boots and helmets and their prices.

The beige one like in my profile pic? That was my old bike - I bought a 161 ktm 1190 ADV there. Only buy an F800 gs if you plan a lot of enduro/trail riding - they are too slow and vibey for a lot of road use.

What?
I rode my F800GS from Lancashire to Ukraine, it was fantastic.
More stable and less vibes than my 990r, plus it gets 15 more miles to every gallon.

I'm not dissing your bike, I'm saying that I didn't like my bike. Commuting on national roads at 60-70mph my bike was asthmatic and vibey. Gravel roads in Eastern Europe are a different matter, F800 gs all the way.

Love the look of that 950Adv, but can't quite work out the things that make it look more rally-hard-core than standard. Is it just the exhaust? or also the front heat shield? rear panel smaller? graphics? or combination of all? or more/something else? If I knew the secrets I could be tempted to get another 950Adv S model, as I loved my last one and shouldn't have sold it. If I did, I'd like it to look more like yours. Do tell .... please!

A mate of mine has a f800gs with 106,000kms on the clock and it beats the "950" hands down on mpg.

I say I was looking at it as I hadn't seen the adv model before. It's a lovely looking bike. I'm looking at a few bikes for purchase hopefully later in the year.
660z tenere and the ktm 1050 adv. Do loads of committing so I think either of these will fit me. I'll just have to wait and see.

Interceptor....

Fair point, as you say you didn't rate your GS800, but it's a bit harsh to offer up your personal feelings about your bike as a definitive appreciation of the model in general.
My GS is frugal, lively and comfortable. Sure the engine lets you know it's there, it's not as smooth as Triumph Triple, but I think the engine characteristics suit the bike.
PS.....
I like what you did underlining "your" I can't figure out how to do that on my iPad
