Lithium Battery

Post by russ_fae_fyvie »

As I was about to head off to the West Coast last week, the battery decided to die on my 2011 Transalp !

Anyway i want to replace it but wondered if anyone has any experience of the new Lithium Batteries and if they are worth the few extra quid and if they can be a direct replacement, like the adverts say !!

thanks

If you get one make sure it's the right type, there are a few sorts of lithium battery and you want the Lithium iron (LiFePO4) one, they are more stable and less likely to burst into flames.

Those are lithium ion (bit like the ones in mobile phones). As Bowber says, you need Lithium IRON for a bike which are not susceptible to thermal runaway etc.

SHORAI are the ones we use (we put them on all our bikes, even my 950 has one). Note that you should not not put them on a "maintenance" charge, they dont need it. Nor should you use a de-sulphating charger with them, it will bugger it up. To safely charge them (which you never need to do unelss you leave power drawing things switched on your bike) then it needs a dedicated, suitable charger.

I had a Shorai on my XR650L. It is tiny and saved a lot of weight. However, during winter when I was running heated gloves and a jacket, it couldn't cope and was soon flat. If you only want it to start the bike, then fine, but run anything else, and they haven't got the oomph. I'm back to a standard gel battery now with no problems at all.

Sounds very much like you didnt buy one with enough A.H to be honest. You cant blame the battery for that (thumbs)
