3.5mm headphone push button. Advice needed

Post by 03001978 »

Evening all,

I was wondering can anyone help?

I listen to music whilst on the bike, and just use a simple setup with a pair of Sony in ear headphones plugged into my phone. or my iPod (whatever is closest).

Most of the time, this isn't an issue but if I am riding with buddies, if we come up to some lights or stop at the petrol station etc.., it is a faff to have to remove my glove to operate a touch screen to pause.

I have been searching for a while now for a basic button which I can mount onto my handlebars, one big enough that I can operate with my glove, something that can pause (or mute) my music. The criteria is simple, one big button with a cable with a 3.5mm male connection and a 3.5mm female connector on the other (cable on this side is optional).

My question is does this exist?

Crate of beer in it for someone who can point me in the direction of a suitable product.

Cheers

Not had a handlebar mouted switch , but did have a switch that was a little lower than my throat which I just hung outside of of the neck of my jacket , before that had a set where there was a jack plug right by the helmet strap so I just pulled it out if needed

To just mute, any switch will do it, you only have to brake/make one of the wires that run to you headphones. A toddle into somewhere like Maplin for some male/female plugs and a bit of electric string should have you sorted.

I use a 20cm headphone extension lead, pop my phone in my pocket/tank bag and leave the tail end hanging out. If I need a quick mute, just pull the headphone jack out of the extension lead. Not particularly high tech but does the job for a few pence off ebay

why dont you modd something like this?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-3-5mm-Jac ... 3a978d4a8d

you can fit the push button or flick switch to it and bobs your uncle. should not take you long either if you handy with soldering. (thumbs)

or you can do it other way around, get any handlebar switch and fit in one of those:

again, very easy. (thumbs)

This is what I currently do as i always have my tank bag on, however when I unplug, in order for it to get going again, I have to push play, plugging it back in doesn't automatically restart, therefore back to square one with taking a glove off....

Not quite sure how these would work, why would I need an additional socket and a switch/push button?

My thoughts were: headphones > switch/push button > 3.5mm extension cable > phone/iPod
I am guessing a button with two female 3.5mm jacks doesn't exist?

Cheers

Hmmm just reread your comment" would I need two of the 3.5mm sockets (second link) so it would be:
Headphones > 3.5mm socket > switch / push button > 3.5mm socket > 3.5mm extension cable > phone / iPod?

Would a switch have two tails or connectors in order to do this?

If your using normal headphone from a mobile then there is a button on the mic, push that and it pauses your music.
Ive got 2 sets here and one has a tiny button but the other the button is about 6mm dia, i've just tried it and its easy to press even with my winter bike gloves on.

These are similar to the ones i use ebay link

The button is prominent and easy to use with gloves on, it would just hang under your chin so easy to reach.

switch idea:

replace cord with audio cable with jack on the end, -that goes to your iphone. the socket you fit onto the switch would be for ur headphones. since its only single switch, i would wire negative wire to the switch, as audio cable has got 4 wires, 2 positive (left and right) and two negative joined together at jack.

or fit 2 sockets, one for extension cable to your iphone, this way when not used, the free wire wont dangling around. (thumbs)
