the trick seems to be getting enough heat into itafricajim wrote:Lookin very trick mate, I've not tried it, I've pulled wrap off my Transalp topbox to see what it was hiding, a bit of a ding and a few scrapes! But I've not tried putting it on.
Well done Jim.
Re: first go at carbon wrapping
Aye, the tutorial I watched said heatgun set at 350 deg C for shaping, this gives a surface temp of 80 to 90 deg C!
I'll give it a try soon!

Thinking of modding the screen on the 990 and would like that finish,
Is it a d.I.y job if so what's involved, or where could I get it done?

The back wall in our kitchen was carbon wrapped by a previous owner in the 1970's. Last year we removed it to reveal a stunning 17th century Inglenook fire place!

trick seems to be getting it hot enough to stretch around corners etc
Re: first go at carbon wrapping
Looks good and well applied as well.
The main things for good application of vinyl are:
Clean the surface properly and degrease to remove all wax etc, pay attention to recesses and concave corners.
Clean dust free working area.
Good quality cast vinyl for wrapping. (there is some real shit around)
Extra material to practice with.
Heat gun.
You'll also need a felt squeegee or similar.
I've been a sign maker for 12 years and done loads of partial wraps on bonnets, roofs and trucks and the one consistent thing is the quality of the material used. If you try using cheap vinyl it'll not stretch properly and the glue will not be good enough to keep the vinyl in any recess.
also cast vinyls reform under the heat so they don't want to pull out as much. I have a thermometer to check the surface temp when I do a final heat of the vinyl after application but if you just get it good and hot without melting it then it's usually ok
Saying that if some one wanted me to wrap a whole car I'd refuse as that takes a good bit of training and experience to do properly.
