Session with the welder, now CCM has a top box rack

Post by BSharp »

I thought I would pop a few pictures up for you folks on here of my Sunday session with the welder. I needed a top box on my CCM and since no one makes racks I figured I will have to!

So I had a look around the workshop at work to see what "scrap" we had  and found several length of solid steel bar bit of threaded bar and a old top box rack off I believe to be a gilera runner scooter.

Here is one of them before......(you will have to wait for the after :) )

So after looking at possible mounting points I decided to basically extend the sub frame to use as a front mounting for the rack and the original grab rail mounting point for the rear rack mounting. So the measuring and cutting starts.

I used a few bits of metal I had kicking around to space the rack off the mud guard

I did have to a little bit of "modification" to the rear mudguard to clear the bars,
I didn't mind this as the plastics aren't in great shape so will all be replaced once modifications are completed.

Bit more tacking and trimming and she is ready to come off get welded up and painted

Image

Bit of Hammer right paint as its hard wearing.

And then she's on!

Just awaiting the arrival of my top box now :) Then load it up and off to Uni!

Good Idea the only addition I was add is to weld a couple of strengthening plates to triangulate loads and help stop vibration I'd probably do one right where all three surfaces meet under the top plate and just another bit of 25 mill flat bar between the two bars about half way down to the original frame

Sorry to mention but did you chamfer the end of the steel bar before you welded as it looks like you didn't really get enough penetration from pics and vibration might crack them off

Tramp - Yeh I had look at the epc to see were it mounted but didn't want to trust the whole weight on the original mountings only  Thanks the tail tidy is extremely complicated bit of kit.....a bent piece of ally :P When I get a new rear mud guard I'm going to fit one of them KTM style rear lamps.

DrFarkoff - That's my plan when I knock up some pannier racks....once I decide if I want hard or soft panniers. Yeh I chamfered the bars to start with, but to be fair its not some of the best welding I have done since bro borrowed welder and brought it back with buggered up torch and bust mask so now I have sunburn on my face  I will be grinding it back and rewelding it all when I do the pannier racks once I sort the torch and mask issues ;) but thanks for the advice any ways.

les9509 - only newspaper I could find was MCN

Paul-S cheers bud, once I get the mask and torch sorted ;) I still have one old scooter rack left over
