A ride down to Campbeltown is spectacular for the road, but ride back in the same day as the town itself is a dump.

Just food for thought!
Steady on! If you come into Campeltown from Carradale you get a much better impression of the town. It is just unfortunate that the main road goes past the worst part of the town.
Ha, ha! Do you come from Campbeltown then Throttled?

Last time I came in on that road it gave me a great impression http://goo.gl/maps/mBTZD ;)

If it gives you any consolation I come from Kirkcaldy and used to live in Harthill!

There is a new ferry starting with Calmac, not sure exactly when but I believe its soon. From Ardrossan, Ayrshire to Campbelltown, Kintyre. Means you only do the Kintyre peninsula once, heading north. Sailings only three times a week though.

If you decide to come through Dumfries and Galloway heading for Ardrossan or another ferry, let me know. Can recommend some routes to follow that avoid main roads.

Good to know, will it call in at Brodick?

Answer 'yes', on a Saturday only, starts on 23rd May. Shame, it's too late for my next trip on the 17th.

Should have mentioned it called in to Arran on Saturdays. My bad.

Hopefully this will be of use to a few of us. Believe it or not, if my memory server me correct, from my house to ullapool is only about ten miles further than to Campbelltown. Its a long run down there just to turn around and come back up.

But the scenery is stunning ;-)

I have lived and worked in various parts of Argyll and would still be there if it was not for work. The run to Campbeltown is such a brilliant route, but people just don't like the idea of having to turn round and come back again. But you can go down one side and back up the other.

This is the best place to eat in the town

On the A83 turning round and riding it again doesn't phase me one bit. License loosing long straights with a stunning view over to the Isle of Gigha, broken up by the occasional twisty bit that cuts through the rock and runs back and forth to the beach. The Carradale side is lovely too, but much more suited to something with long travel suspension, and much less likely to result in you doing occasional bursts of silly speed!

I'm probably more of a fan of coastal scenery than mountain scenery though, I just love the sea.
