Accessories and insurance
Accessories and insurance
So following my little accident yesterday the insurance company have decided to write of the AT they are going to make me an offer...! But I have found out even though all my "accessories" (as swinton bikes call them) which are panniers, racks, tall screen, aero trim and GPS are listed on my policy they are only covered to a maximum value of £100. Can I suggest people check this out especially if insured through Swinton bikes.

Sorry to hear about your accident .
Can you not remove the Accessories if they are writing off the bike ?
But I hear what you are saying regarding the insurance, laughable as the accessories are not cheap .
I think the insurances companies are shocking with their policies , rip off comes to mind .
I don't know how bad your accident was damage wise ! But since AT are so sought after and freely available s/h parts , could you make them a offer to buy the bike back , I have no idea , but heard many people doing this . !
Glad you are OK anyways .. thats the main thing .

Sorry to hear about the accident.
You can buy the bike back from the insurance company usually for mickey mouse money.
You then have to get a DVLA inspection so you can put it back on the road.
Well worth it if the insurance company is not giving you much money for the bike.

Glad you're ok after your accident, thanks for the heads up bud!!
Insurance companies rarely play fair......you do the right thing by telling them about any extras you're bike may have, then they up you're premium because of that, then, if the unfortunate time arrives when you have to claim, they offer pennies!!!
Hope you can get the bike back from them, fingers crossed for you!!

dont accept the £100, tell them you want to remove your "accessories" before they dispose of the bike. they want to pay you peanuts and then flog it on for a higher price, they know it will auction for more with a few choice bits on it.
buying the bike back and breaking an @T could be profitable

I will be removing the accessories, hoping the panniers and rack can be bashed straight, screen and Gps are knacked, Have been told that might be able to get a bit more money from the helmet and leather policy under uninsured losses...? But as it was only me in the accident can't see who the insurance co would go for....
I am hopefully going to buy the bike back and rebuild as I don't think they will pay out enough to get a replacement bike as the AT are quite expensive for an old bike.

Re: Accessories and insurance
Firstly glad to hear you are ok.
Bit of advice, never except the insurance companies first offer. What they will probably do is send you a check straight to your house before consulting you. This check is usually vastly below the market value but a lot of people just accept it and cash it. Don't, and send it back to them. They will then send a more realistic valued check. This happened to a family member recently.
A friend of mine from work wrote off his triumph speed triple recently and he had spen a fortune putting Carbon wheels etc on it. He bought the bike back off the insurance company mainly for the expensive parts he put on it. He found out later that he could get the bike back on he road so he did just that.
Thanks Wayne

So I finally hear from insurance company today and they say to me "the bike is a total loss and looking at the condition I will be offering you the market value. Which from my research is around £200..........! " AN AFRICA TWIN FOR £200..! I say how is that the market value? You tell me where I can get one for that? Then asks what did I pay for it and will review the photos again. Why do we bother with insurance? £200 is less than the years premium?...!
