You Been here?

Post by RoadTrekker »

Has anyone been to the Carpathian Mountains in Rumania?
What were the roads like?
Was it safe?
Any accomodation?

Thinking of doing a trip through Hungary onto the Carpathian Mountains then into Serbia and Croatia, Italy, Austria and Germany.
Any info would help?

We stayed in Transylvania and did some roads and lanes in the area.

Fantastic place - some of the best roads are up there on the Carpathanian range but it can get snowed in.

We went in April (not this year) and we got up as far as the Ski lodge - above that level was completely blocked

Nice twisty bits though but watch out for the drivers - they drive on any side of the road - including overtaking !!

Just looked at your avatar

Will you be taking that bike

You have to go through Slovakia and sample the 509 - a 16km straight with no traffic lights or towns and just made for hypersports bikes - Look at the back road from Esztergom (north of Budapest) to Trnava heading Northwest !!

We stayed in Szentendre (just north of Budapest) en route to Romania

Maps: - some people I was with had Michelin Maps but these did not have as much detail as the Freytag & Berntd maps of the same ratio and hence they got lost sometimes

a few yeas ago a my friends and i packed up the mx bikes into the van and went to Ukraine part of the mountain range. We rented a few houses in a skiing resort and rode in the mountains for a week. There are no preservation laws, so you can literally ride any way you like in the mountains. On the other hand the place is so vast, that nobody would even notice you.
Everyone was living in huge house by himself (it was of the season and very cheap), we eat and drank like kings, everything cooked in a resort restaurant (fresh trout, lamb you just ask a day before). Had a garage for bike service, sauna, pool tables etc.
After I came back home and checked my card - I barely spent 600 euros all inclusive :woohoo:
Had problems with corrupt police though :( be careful.

best holiday i've ever had.

Thanks for the info. I have been watching some videos on YouTube and it showed that most of the roads look poor so I may have to consider getting another bike for that tour, I don't think my FJR would take all the pot holes. The mountain area looks really interesting though.
I live in the Czech Republic in Prague so I know that the roads in Slovakia are really good the trouble is now that the police are setting up hidden radar traps and its a pay on the spot fine.
My mate got caught in his car, he said he had no money so they escorted him to a ATM to pay the fine!!!!

I did mean Rumania as the place is RUINED!!!

hi, roads in Romania are not very good but the FJR will be fine as long as you take care. unmissable roads are the well known Transfargan and Transalpina. Accomodation is available with a little effort. Brasov is worth a visit. in Hungary i recommend Route66 Biker Camp. Andy

Your bike its fine for the journey , Austria , Slovakia , Czech republic , Hungary are all beautiful countries to visit , nice people and good roads .
Romania ( Rumunsko for you ;) ) its allright but some of the locals are thieves.
As for the police , the solution is simple dont speed , the speed limits are there for a reason .
