why bother "chewing on" taking it on and off ??????? just leave it on it comes in handy.husabang wrote:Can someone explain to me the benefit of keeping hard luggage on all the time...?
Is there some sort of advantage that i haven't discovered
Is it not removable?..
Or is it just for the look factor
Surely a 1200GSA with full luggage on is no more effective at getting through rush hour traffic then a Volvo 200?

Why do people ride around with full luggage on all the time?

Touratech Zega panniers are supposed to be watertight and mine are for sure.husabang wrote:nice idea!g00ner wrote:Because I keep my lunch in there![]()
I wish the TOURATECH panniers were watertight so i could do that.
By the way, I drive around with panniers all the time except for those rides I want to go "light" green laning.
I have motorcycle clothing for any given weather situation which might be versatile in Denmark, I keep my puncture repair gear there which came in handy twice so far, I keep an extra piece of wood to put under my sidestand when muddy, I keep extra luggage straps for whatever I bring home with that was not on the bike already, I keep wallet, phone, keys and what ever comes in handy.
Another thing is that IF I get involved in an accident, I find the zega panniers and my Famsa Tank panniers will protect my legs, hips and the bike in general.
And by the way, I have no issues following japanese sportsbikes on twisty and bendy small roads even when I have these panniers extra carriage weight than they do.

Mine stopped being waterproof after one off road bashing
the ardcases are 10x better IMO

They will never be waterproof again unless they are dead straight, as they are so flimsy and badly built i can't see this happening cheers

Re: Why do people ride around with full luggage on all the time?
i have the topbox on all the time, some luggage is just too useful. i dont leave my panniers on because i dont need them and they stay in good condition. but i dont see a problem if someone wants to leave theirs on permanently.
if i did leave mine on then filtering is not a problem, well designed panniers (like my oem honda) will be narrower than the bars anyway, its these big metal packing cases mounted on railway girders that stick out a bit far.

I've bashed many a massive wooden or metal chikane with my Zega panniers and they are still completely water tight. They could be used as life saving jacckets.

Re: Why do people ride around with full luggage on all the time?
Recently, and for the first time this year, I put my side boxes on as well as the top box, which is on all the time.
OMG WHY WOULD I DO THAT......
My balls are big enough, so rough and tuff is not the reason. I am 6ft 3" so looking bigger is not an issue, I don't give a sh1t what anyone else thinks, so it isn't that
The real reasons are;
A)in this weather I can carry every conceivable piece of kit I may need for full summer to cold and wet. Plus my work clothes, plus my lunch including 2,ltr flask.
b) I can pick up shopping on the way home.
c) I like to pee off those who can not remove their panniers or do not have any.
d) I can pee off drivers who think I might hit them when I filter
e) Pee off other bikers who think I shouldn't be able to filter with them on
f) Pee off those who are jealous I have a GSA with all the bells and whistles
g) I can store two helmets and jackets away when I-we go out and not have to carry them about.
h) I can leave them off the bike for most of the year to make my bike look different
I) I can't think of anything else, but in short. GROW UP, why do we buy these bikes and never go to Mongolia, why buy desert suits and then ride to Southport, Why do bikers wear replica race suits yet ride like twonks, Why buy Moto-X boots `to ride to work and back or go 50 miles on a Sunday. A £1000 hi tech suit, but won't ride when its raining, Add a camel foot or £1000's of 'adventure' accessories then do 5000 a year on tarmac.
BECAUSE WE CAN....... so thats good enough and it brings me back to a scene from LONG WAY ROUND.
Ewan n Charlie in a petrol station on there way to Felixstowe to start the LWR and some other biker says to Ewan " Do you know Boorman and McGregor are going around the world on these types of bikes"........
Just because we ain't going today, doesn't mean we ain't goin.......
:cheer: :cheer:

Exactly what R2M said!
----
The default supposition seems to be that they are sad posers. Maybe they just want to carry more than a mobile phone and a credit card.
So much judging each other
This very (anti supposed poser) sentiment had me trying to pack without using my alloy panniers last time I headed off. Worried I might look like a try-hard  Glad to say I wised up and took the boxes: they were exactly what the trip wanted.
Each to their own. Boxes can be useful and if you're using them some of the time why keep taking them on and off?

I am usually going to Sainsburys but I may just get the overwhelming urge to visit outer Mongolia - best be prepared!
There is something about life and dress rehearsal that I need to remember ...
