OK how do you do it?

I have been thinking about putting an accessory socket on my 97 Funduro and I am wondering where you's have put yours? and how did you's hook it up? :dry: There seems to be loads on the net about where and how but as I dont use sat nav it would be used to charge the phone. I was thinking about putting it under the seat as it wouldn't be used that often. I am a novice when it comes to this but I am a keen learner :laugh: Or if 1 of the local guys wants to show/help me that would be better

Really easy one to do this - You'll need one of these:

Very easy to do, just wire up onto battery and use whenever you want! Keep under the seat or drill hole in fairing for wherever you want socket to end up.

All is in place on that - it is also fused so no need to mess with anything at all. Just wire onto battery. Obviously (and I say this - dont take offense - because people do screw up) the battery needs to be disconnected Negative first, then positive - pop the corresponding colour wires on, then screw back on in opposite order, Positive first then Negative.

Hi I can only tell you how I did it.

I went to a car parts shop, like Motormainia brought a cigreat lighter (accessibly) socket attach with with 2 leads and a rubber stopper cover.

I then removed the 2 leads to length I need, then put the 2 end put loops ends on them then disconnected the battery then re connected it to the battery up under the seat, I only use it for charging my mobile phone, or anything when im away riding.

I know the socket is live all the time but yet to have a problem with it, It is of course fused as well, or you can connect it to the ignition & earth so only comes on when ignition turned on.

My sat nav I have had it hard wired, when I brought my new bike, they did it for me as a free bee.

what you want to do is spot in..I just got a cigarette extension lead and cut the funny end off and connected a inline fuse then to battery.its under the seat..but when touring with a tank bag it can safely reach inside to charge the phone,mp3 etc while riding.

That way it cant tangle round the bars etc..some use the dashboard mounted ones ...we are all different which is nice depending on the battery connection point i`d solder some proper ends on rather than twist the wire round as the cable is thin and gets hot..

oh and a little vaseline to prevent corrosion helps too..just dont forget its connected other wise flat battery.

Personally I'd use a relay so it's ignition powered but each to their own.

I would dash mount if possible, it looks like it's OEM and a lot neater.

You may be a wanting to consider a Hella type socket, as these often come wiv a grip device to hold the Plug in better than the Standard accessory socket.
The Hella type do hold in much better when riding....



The standard "Accessory" type are larger and more often than not the plugs have a spring in them which wiv vibration can push the plug out...

You can get short adaptors that will allow the standard plugs t' be a used if required.

If yer Bike be a fitted wiv an Optimate Charger socket... e-bay (Busters Same as M&P) Do an adaptor to plug into that wiv a standard "Accessory" Socket on the end....

You can fit yer cables wiv a plug that will go int' either type...

Hella socket well tucked out ov the way ov the weather An switched an all.... (Usually used fer me Heated Waistcoat when doing the three hundred miles ov Exeter Trial an back in January....

Heated Waistcoat lead wiv Hella Plug.
Double USB STD Accessory plug fer t' use me SatMap and Mobile phone together (Whilst stationary)....
USB t' SatMap Lead.
USB t' Phone lead.
Hella Plug t' double Hella socket extension.

Optimate Socket on Rt side ov me Bike....


This enables you ter use almost any accessory and fer others to use theirs if necessary.
Hella socket is on separate direct to the ignition fused circuit. So will only work if ignition on (Side lights with key removed or when engine on)...

Optimate circuit fused direct to the battery...

So if yer out an yer need t' get a replacement accessory yer be not aving t' faff around splicing up new connections...

All these go inside a very small sealer bag..... Sorted...

Another option could be a panel-mounted water-resistant USB socket like this:



Phones, satnavs, cameras etc all use 5v USB, so why bother with adaptors, when you can plug straight into this socket.

I've been waiting for the 2amp version as my phone draws close to that when using GPS, bluetooth and keeping the display on permanently, now it's arrived the order's been placed.

However some take 12v So the Accessory Hella or STD still needed fer them....
