The cost to do a RTW trip?

Post by Selous »

Hi Right at the adventure day on Sunday a person asked the owner how much they spent, going round the world, which was in 2002 /3 Jenny reckoned they had spent £26000 her words where we stayed in hotels had a few beers er about...

In the Army we called that a SWAG (Super Wide Arsed Guess!)

So bearing in mind you already have the bike 'farkled' for your RTW (Round the World) trip.
how much do you think, it would cost?
Please bear in mind if camping or camping & hotels just you or 2 up or even 2 bikes, instead of 2 up.
of course going to Oz or other continents where you have to go by boat or fly in

If you have looked at the price etc I would be interested.

I've read people on HUBB say about £10,000 at the least. I think I could do it for less than that though, given the fact I have no desire to stay in hotels, would eat once a day and so on.

I suppose it depends on how much luxury you want. If you intend to spend nights at hotel, going to restaurants, museums etc., in the day, then you'll need over £20,000. If you want to camp with the occasional night at a hotel, a solid diet, I'd say about £12,000 and it's possible to go even cheaper.

i went traveling round the world for a year and spent £10 000 not including a plane ticket
never stayed in one hotel or b&b but done loads and went to see loads camped when i could

i think it depends where you go a daily budget in africa is a fraction of what it would be in oz nz or america

cheers

When you've got this one sorted out you can start a thread about lengths of pieces of string :D

The cost to do a RTW trip?

There's endless discussion on this on Horizons Unlimited. There's an active thread from a guy thinking of doing it in Unimog on £500 per month. While I am sure you could do it on that I think you would be having a pretty crap time.

To me it's a simple case of deciding how many miles you think you will do divide by the number of days and times by the cost of fuel - assume typical euro prices coz that where it's all heading. Thats gonna give you about a third to a quarter of your budget if camping all the time. The rest is Food, accommodation, border fees, visas etc, bribes and fines, spares, repairs and contingency.

So, a 20,000 mile trip over 1 year = an average of 55miles a day. Call that 1 gallon per day or £6 on fuel. Times 3 or 4 for the other costs - and that isn't a lot and you have £18-24 per day or on round numbers £150ish per week or £600 per month.

Best advice I read on HU was to try and do it at home first - withdraw your budget in cash and hide your cards. Then live, ride your bike, buy your food, pretend to pay for accommodation, and keep a bit back for contingency using that cash and only on that cash for a month. if it runs out you have to walk and go hungry.

Personally I think £1000 per person per month would make for a modestly relaxing trip. I don't want to live like a motorised hobo.
