How Much Kit is Too Much????

Post by Mark1961 »

I found the following link via another web site. I thought it was ineresting! It's one mans idea of what he packs and carries on his travels.

Now this other forum, in some cases people posted comments that were not very pleasent.

Remember we all have different ideas. If you were to put 100 of use on parade with our bikes and kit. You can safely say we would all be different in what we pack and how we pack it.

So please respect this fellow enthusiast and only post meaningful views.

If you've got a Beemer you'd best not load it with too much or you'll be paying through the nose for a new final drive, overloading seems to be the death of them!
Any how, I'm not goin to rant about what I carry, the Mighty Varadero could carry more than any mule!
My simple answer to this is go on short trips, weekends away, find what you need and what you don't. I apreciate folk on here have learnt over the yrs what is and isn't needed, but everyone's different. One important thing is a Swiss army tool, carries the most important things in life,,,, a tin opener for food, a bottle opener for beer and a corkscrew for wine, Sorted!

i remember seeing that on the XRV.org forum or HuBB? dont remember anyone being nasty though, either it was after the last time i looked at the thread or youre talking about me!!
each to their own, thats a lot of stuff but if thats what he wants, whatever.
im the last one to comment about folks taking too much kit, i take armchairs, full size air beds and a giant tent away with me, and its just for me too. and i thought i was a bit overloaded till i saw what some guys bought just for a long weekend camp at the XRV meet! when you consider the guys final comment at the bottom, and this is for a 4-5month trip, then it does make a bit of sense but so does the last post about the beemers final drive achilles heel.

Its all about personal preference really. I mean some people would happily jump on there bike with nothing more than a tarp to sleep under. I would feel scared to do that, but I would feel very comfortable going with all that kit.

On another note, surely Claudio would be more surprised at how little that guy is carrying after travelling with Ewan Charlie and there convoy of support vehicles.:P

There was a little duplication (like multiple waterproof jackets, multiple warm layers) but in general, if I was doing a multi week/month trip that was going to cover a proper range of climates, I could see myself taking something near that.

@africajim - With regards the comment of overloading a BMW - 175lbs is about the weight of a person so he really isn't carrying that much weight. We regularly ride 2 up with probably 80/100lbs of luggage and our BMW has done a great job. Do you have anything to back up the claim of overloading being the cause of final failure? It's the first I've heard of it.

I'm not going to fuel the debate on BMW final drives but if you've not heard of final drive problems you've never tried google.
A friend of mine was on his fourth before he sold the bike. It's a known issue with 1200's I assure you.

Well its 0600 saturday, ive been awake since 0400 laying in bed fretting about kit and loading my Strom for Morocco. After watching this guy i feel a bit more at ease about what to carry, taking only the essentials although i may double up on thermals to keep the essentials warm.
Im sure anything i dont take can easily be purchased on the road, if i cant, if its not there i cant use it so i may need to improvise.

yes its me. cant sleep so im on here yet again!

ive heard of final drive woes too often for it to be a rumour, shafts go and the seal that comes out of the gbox. whether yours fails or not will just be one of those things i guess, the percentage of bikes sold that fail is very small or bmw would do something about it, i hope. 1200s seem to suffer more than older models, or is that because theyre more popular and mainstream than before? i dont know. ive been waiting for the dreaded "honda rectifier burn out" ever since i bought my varadero so i wouldnt worry about it, if it happens it happens.

anyhow, back on thread, sorry about that,
when i go camping my bike looks like this guys but i dont take half as much stuff, hes got tardis bags! he is a master of packing, no wasted space at all well done mate. but there is some duplication i dont really understand, like the waterproofs, hes wearing a suit already so why take more?
cameras- a big SLR, a compact SLR that he says he takes videos with, AND a digicam?
i wouldnt be packing all that specialist food but youve got to remember in europe we're never far from civilization, whereas even in the states you can be a long way from anything, let alone canada or south america, hence the SPOT tracker too i suppose. which is another surprise to my way of thinking- if you camp a lot in the middle of nowhere, i would rather have a stove that used petrol from the bike instead of gas cans.

what a nice guy, and obviously rightly proud of his setup. hes got his priorities right, TWO big bags of coffee!
