I use Dover -Calais because I have a fair way to travel down, so about 11.00 ish or and hour earlier. You lose and hour anyway--but at least I can have a good breakfast and be down near Rouen by 5 pm local time ready to pitch up, pop to the supermarket for food and wine and also some croissants for breakfast--and then be packed up and heading south again by 9 am (avoiding Rouen if your bike won't qualify for a Crit D'aire sticker. I got flashed a couple of times going round Rouen last year on N and D roads(they are so quiet and smooth), but fortunately since Brexit the swapping of vehicle details is now defunct. Coming back I do book, but if I'm a day early or so, or a bit late, then I sort it out on arrival (I don't do much on the telling bone)--you can normally get on the next boat, and they don't always charge you extra.

Starting to get excited now, lol  8-) 8-) 8-) :P :P  :D
Yes, the tunnel flexi tickets are dearer so we always book a return date and time. Not sure if that's the same with the Ferry. We've turned up both early and late for the tunnel on the pre-booked travel day and they've just put us on the next available train (if it's not full), so there seems to be a bit of unofficial wiggle room if you get delayed (or are early).

p.s. the last time I was on the Ferry from Calais was as a foot passenger. I had a cracking curry for dinner on board. I find it quite relaxing being on the boat for 1.5 hours but the tunnel is a lot quicker, of course.

Godspeed wrote: Thu Feb 01, 2024 9:20 pm Yes, I find the bulk of money goes on accommodation but I don’t eat very posh.
Campsites are about £20
Lunch can be bread and cheese and a banana so £5
A salad in the evening or something light £12
So could get away with £40 a day

Alcohol is extra

When I rode up through Northern Europe I found fairly cheap hotels were in the region of £60 or so per night, but southern Europe was about £50.
I agree with these numbers.
But it is hard to be specific.
Time of the year and location makes a huge difference. July in north and August in the south are peek periods.
And the way you live.
Camping, your own breakfast. Sandwiches or fruits for lunch and a restaurant dinner gives one level
Hotel, with hotel breakfast and dinner. A tour in the bar. and a full restaurant lunch. A completely different level.

If you are more than one traveler. I recommend you to look at campsites for cabins.
You can get the cost down, without carring camping eqipment.
Only a sheet and a towel.
Those cabins are rented per cabin, Not per person. Ideal if you are 2 or 4 people travelling together.
+ Save money by preparing your own breakfast

Tips nr 2: Sweden has its own currency, That has lost a lot in value. So Sweden is by far the cheapest country in North. And Norway is very expensive.

Lets take a look at accondations in July in Mora/Borloänge/Uppsala Sweden.
1 £ = 12:50 SEK

Compare Algarve in August and Mid Portugal in September.
And there are two different worlds.

Cafes are good enough for lunch
£ 5 for coffe an sandwiches
Dinner. Around 12 £

Hotel 4 estacoes is a ggod example of a biker friendly hotal in chaves. Close to the ned of N2
https://www.booking.com/hotel/pt/reside ... #hotelTmpl

Price for a single room: 34 £

Torao is another example along N2.
But in the South part.
Also 34 £ in Aug. SIngle room

You can travel in this area with a cost for accomondation around £ 35. SIngle room. In August.
Add 25 for food, water.. => £ 60 per day
Searching for simple but nice hotels.

Camping is less than £ 20

I wonder what the cheapest channel route is... ferry at night, out of season? .. or just take the Chunnel by rail, strapped to the chassis (the bike i mean lol) .

cheap cheap cheap ..... just like me lol.
DFDS from Newhaven to Dieppe, £37.50 each way in June/July and if you're over 60 and call them rather than book on line they'll take 20% off :)

I'm budgeting on £45 a day as a cheapskate, most municipale campsites I've used have been €7-10, keep the milage down to enjoy more kultcha and the Himalayan does 85mpg+ :)
Enfield Himalayan... apparently they're Marmite... not keen on Marmite, but like Vegemite
