Tamar Trial

Just had one of the most fun days ever doing the above with the Launceston and North Cornwall Club. 75 miles and 21 observed section of lovely Devon and Cornwall countryside with the final sections in sight and smell of the sea on the North Cornwall coast. Everyone friendly, no one taking it too seriously and every kind of bike you could imagine from old British pre-unit singles to modern trail bikes, and a Honda C90!

Which bike did you use?

Pampera all the way!

I'd already sold the 525 to a nice guy from Dorset.

The two guys I rode with were both on old-school Hondas: an XR400 and an XL185 twin shock. We didn't take it too seriously, but I did clean some sections, fell off 3 times, lost the route a couple of times. I went much better after I remembered to let the back tyre down. I've probably come last, but I did get a finishers sticker!

The route took in our village hall, where the parish did pasties, tea and cakes. We were flagged off the start at the local farm supplies store by the Mayor of Launceston, and finished in time for a late lunch at a country pub. Lots of happy people waving at us as we rode through villages. A few spectators enjoying the fun on some of the sections.

Living the West Country dream!

Forgot to say (as they run in front of the solos...sidecar outfits too. KTMs, an Aprilia and, I think, a Norton.

Plus a variety of cars ranging from ones that look like Gumdrop to left-overs from Mad Max.

I hate to tell people that they'd love to do an event, because they might not enjoy it, but you & Liz would love it.

Sounds like great fun, is there anything like this in South Wales?

Not that I know of.
There's this in the Forest of Dean...I don't know if they started up again after lockdown. But it's in reach of South Wales.

These guys will know...

But it's a harder and more competitive event than the Tamar. I knew people who did it, and it was quite competitive and pressured.

There's a guy who comes from Cambridgeshire to do the Tamar...it's that good.

It's a bit of west country sport, most run cars, bikes and sidecars.

There's also the the Fred Rist trial in Carmarthenshire but that's also a lot harder than the car based trials.

The oldest rider on the trial was in his 80s. He had his daughter with riding him (in her 60s) to keep an eye on him.

great fun indeed. When I was living in Ivybridge I used to do the Bristol Phoenix Trail bike trials on an XR250--had to file the lock stops back for the tight turns--lots of lanes with diversions off for observed sections and about 120 miles in the day--good memories.
