I also have a giant Coleman with one big hoop thats like a paraglider--perfect for summer use but not so good in a strong wind(but I have configured two short poles that support the hoop near the sides and support it and stop it lozenging). I also use army Arctic tent poles--really short and strong aluminium--perfect for tarps--just needed to change the "spike" at the top for tarp eyelet size. You can also get some very good lightweight aluminium poles from China (search fleabay) which are also short (for the bike) and can be set up in two, three or four sections to change height--and also used at the 4 corners of a tarp to make a much more rigid structure not relying solely on guy tension to keep the shape. I also use those short elasticated truck type tarp tie downs with a ball direct to the tarp sides and then attach the guys to those. and that means that the tarp can flex a bit in the wind--works well----it takes time to develop but once set up makes camping on the road a pleasure. I would add that my tents are less than 3 kg and good quality and a tarp makes a big difference--and I also don't add much weight or bulk with a quality tarp.(2 small packages are better than one big one!)
Need photos of the tarp setup to fully appreciate what you are saying.

I'm getting the Vango Beta 350XL which costs around £115.

Very spacious with decent headroom and meshed doors keeping the bugs out. It also has a bathtub groundsheet so no flooded porch area when it starts tipping down.
The full packed weight is 6.6Kg which great for this size tent.

I agree, the Galaxy 300 is about 2Kgs lighter and taller in the porch area but smaller in the sleeping area. The rest of the dimensions are about the same.
With the Galaxy, you are also limited to 1 door. I prefer the 2 door option, if the weather changes direction you can alternate your access.
But the big difference is the price. The Galaxy 300 is double the price (£240) of the Beta 350XL (£115).

Vango Nova 200 or 300 fits into one pannier along with all my camping stuff.

Vango Meteor is the same tent.

I got this one recently https://www.blacks.co.uk/equipment/3492 ... t-red.html Good space for 2+ kit
and a black inner, so might be able to get some sleep during the summer.
Was also easy to put up.
