Booking.com is an agent or broker, they want paying for providing the portal that allows you to search. We are listed with Tripadvisor, and they take around 9% from us for each booking. Hence why more people are moving to airbnb.com

I've always used booking.com.A few times during my stay the owner will say to book direct next time as it will be cheaper but never anything like 70%.For the convenience of not having to trawl separate websites I would still use booking.com in an area I'm not familiar with.

I always use booking.com. I thought they were cheap. I guess next time I find a hotel on there I'll ring the hotel first and see if they can do it minus Booking.com's fee?

Quick story about booking.com
When in the Alps last year on the bikes we sat in a petrol station in Como, Italy and I booked 3 rooms for Lecco which was about half hour away....or so I thought.
A young guy pulled up in his Aston Martin and we got talking as he was interested in the bikes, where we'd been etc. He then asked where we were heading and I said Lecce. He said my good that's 1000km away you better get going. I said no its half hour away, which is when I found out id booked for Lecce not Lecco. I got straight back on the website and cancelled the booking and made a new booking for Lecco.
All this happened within 10 minutes but booking.com still charged me the 180 euros for the room I cancelled.
Morale of the story, look at the map provided on the website for the hotel you book before you press BOOK!

+1.

Although I did recently use them for a short stay in Wales and I did check the website of the hotel I had booked their website was about £20 more expensive than booking.com.
Boo :-p

Agreed, but I only ever use accommodation that doesn't charge for cancellation up to 24 hours or so in advance. You would probably lose that benefit booking direct.

I have always used Booking.com to check an area and then when I have a couple of hotels I check them on 1 or 2 other sites and look at their own website too.

I find Booking is generally good and can be great for 'holding' a room at no cost if necessary.

Depends how much they have collected and know about you (digitally) Its going in the direction of profiling and presenting you with what you can afford / prepared to pay. Using your data to individualise and tailor your experience to better meet your wants and needs works both ways. Its the digital equivalent of the guy down the market getting to know you and knowing how to sell you what and for how much.
