Hello Folks,
Looking for any advice, recommendations etc on hotels, good roads and sightseeing spots around the North West Spain area, sailing out on the 4th of June Santander ferry for a fortnight biking holiday, got 12 days to have nice tootle around the area, the early plan iv'e got in my head at the moment is stay 3 nights at 4 different locations rather than moving on every day, maybe 1st stop head to Potes then move across into Northern Portugal/Atlantic coast then say head back eastwards across the Bay of Biscay coastline, never been to this part of Spain so any advice/suggestions will be appreciated.

Cheers.
Keith.

I'm going to the same area from 13th June until 26th, this whole part of the country is great for roads, scenery and food, my no. one suggestion is that you buy Michelin maps for the parts of the country you want to visit and then spend plenty of time checking out the hundreds of great roads in the period between now and then.

We stayed in this place for a week or so about 3 years ago.

Great hotel, great food, fantastic roads and scenery. Town was a bit small and quite though.

Been to the area a few times. Frankly, wherever you go I don't think you'll be disappointed. Sometimes the Picos trap the weather from the Atlantic so check the weather forecast and follow the sun. Consider a few days in Galicia, try staying here...

Also north and central Portugal are excellent. You won't have trouble finding accommodation if you avoid August. I could suggest roads but in most areas you will struggle to find poor ones. PM me if you want more details.
Central Portugal last summer.

This ones not to be missed!!
The Famous Picos Deer.
Well worth the ride, must be one of the best roads in the Picos from Potes to Riano.
Some fantastic roads and places, just roam around, you cannot go wrong.

Here's a good run we did a few years ago over two weeks:

1. Santander to Potes via the Picos
2. Potes to Ponferrada
3. Ponferrada to Pontevedra
4. Pontevedra to Santiago de Compastela
5. Ride around Santiago out to Fisterre and San Adrian
6. Santiago to Porto via Baiona
7. Porto to Lamego on the Douro valley
8. Lamego to Salamanca
9. Salamanca to Segovia.
10. Ride around Segovia, Valley of the Fallen and Sierra de Guadarrama.
11. Segovia to San Vicente de la Barquera via the Picos.
12. San Vicente to Santander.

Limit to 3 or 4 nights I would recommend these for good parking facilities:

Santiago de Compastella (garage bay in basement for bike):

Porto (barrier on car park, near the town and the Douro):

Then go for one in Segovia (we camped)

and one on the coast e.g. San Vicente

+1 for San Vicente.

Here's a great hotel we stayed at on the last night. Easy reach for the return ferry.

Excellent bar overlooking the bay:
