Tarp pitching

I'm off camping mid august for the first time in two years.
I'm intrigued by all this tarp business I read about here and there.
Seems like a good idea to not have to be cocooned in your tent when (not if) it rains.
Anyone got pics of their tarp pitched up?
Do you just use a builders tarp and 'make' your own poles etc?
I like the idea of pitching a tarp between our tents so we have a dry spot, anyone else done this?

Good piece of kit, some were in use at the simmer:
This was Friday. The one on Tea Urns tent(foreground) survived the weekend. Once the wind got up others were taken down.
Great if its not too windy or in amongst trees were you can tie it off. Most come with poles, I have the Quetcha tarp, about £25 from Decathlon.

Tarps are great mate! At some point I'll dig out some photos and show you how versatile they can be for creating a working area outside the tent. The wind can be a problem, but I tend to have mine pegged low at one end into the wind to create a lee and allow a small fire just outside to radiate heat down onto me.
...and yes, they make a cracking communal area between tents!

I also use two walking poles upside down for better ridgity. Fiver each from Morrisons and they compact down to 12"

What the hell is that pink thing hanging off your tarp? I can't figure out if it's:
a) Something you've killed which needs skinning
b) Something you've killed which has been skinned (Possibly a Chupacabra)
c) Some kind of high fashion flesh coloured handbag
or
d) Some bizarre bagpipe/sexual apparatus hybrid
All seem unlikely, but judging by appearances.... (and I've not been to one of these events yet...)
I'm scared to ask, but please clarify
