Whose a Clot!

Post by Bimbler »

A word of caution to riders of my age (66) above and below.

Visited the doc today only to be referred directly to the Infirmary, to learn I had a blood clot. No issues really, Doctor to tests to treatment took just 3.5 hours. (The NHS is fantastic).

Asked what I might have been doing that brought this on, long flights etc, I admitted that I had been riding around the Arctic Circle (Norway 2016) for a couple of weeks, and that my lower limbs were pretty much inactive the whole time, despite stops for fuel and coffee etc. Also, I was asked if I was dehydrated, and on reflection I was (not getting up for a pee in the night), and the weather was above 20 degrees for 5 days, (really, it did subsequently go down to 0.5 degrees for a spell) and I was layered up for the cold.

Delighted with the NHS treatment, but I would hate to learn of anyone else being caught out the same way. Try and move your legs about as you ride, (my colleague was all but performing pirouettes on the bike to my amusement) and ensure you are well hydrated.

Doc says I can still go riding and to stay active, but my risk of a Pulmonary Embolism and Stroke have improved.

Take good care everyone.

Oh no. Paul.
I told you the secret is not to wait until you feel like you need to stretch, but to do it as and when you get the chance, or if you feel like a dance.

We'll have to have some sort of morning exercise routine at the upcoming HISS

That's bad news.I'm usually ready for a short break after 1-1.5 hours on the bike so hopefully that's enough to prevent it.

Too much tea Paul!! ;)

Very pleased though to find out you sussed the problem before it became really serious. I have to say I always like a good walk at the end of a days riding, the body just seems to need it! Spud will have to come up with an "on bike" exercise routine for us old 'uns!!

Thanks for the update, think I should take my 62yr old body for the health check update due about now. Like you, just had 2 weeks, uk to Norway and back, 5000 miles plus. I also spent plenty of time sat at 80ish kph and practised the 'off road stance' stood up on my R1200RS pegs. I know from last trip, same area two years ago, I did not drink enough as I got leg cramps at night, now ditched the tapered sleeping bag for a larger rectangular one and did sleep far better.
Did drink plenty this time, milk and cereals each end of the day, packet soups and coffee during the day, plus plenty of Norwegian water to avoid those night cramps.
Sounds like you and I both had the best of the weather, left southwest, devon 5th june and only saw heavy rain around Antwerp on way out, nothing much in Norway but paid for it on way back. Denmark to Kent in one day and rain of the 'biblical type in Germany. Definitely the worst 5 hours on standing water, rain, spray and very heavy congestion I have ever ridden in 40 years of biking.
A great two weeks but last day was more than I intended.
