anyone succesfully used car gps or phone for navigation on bike if so how did you sort visibility ?
i know you can buy little hooded holders to reduce glare but feedback seems to indicate they don't work very well or the see through covers make visbility very poor Anyone found a solution? .for a smartphone i guess ideally you'd need something that allows you to control the touchscreen without removal .
thanks

Used to have one as a cheap solution and they are OK but as you say glare can be a real problem and trying to get the touch screen to work can be a pain, also tended to get condensation.
Shelled out on a Garmin 390 a few months ago, best thing I ever did (thumbs) use it with your gloves on and the sun was right behind me the other day and I couldn't see the instruments on the S10 because of glare but the sat-nav was easily to see (thumbs)

I stick mine in a ziplock bag in my pocket with a headphone bud in my right ear and an ear plug in the left ear. When the sat nav (Either Google Maps or OSMand) speaks, I judge what it says by looking at the environment and follow..... Can get a bit tricky as some junctions - however I've found some amazingly nice places by taking the wrong turn at a complex junction
....It even took my down a Green lane I didn't know about once - now that was a bonus as I was on the DRZ

I use mine in a waterproof case on a Bull mount and works fine, glare can be an issue but enough adjustment on the mount to angle it away, obviously a bike one will be better but cost 3 time what a car one does.

I'm with Nigel on this...I've only had the Garmin for a couple of weeks, but it's just so much better than the "car" satnag-in-a-bag! Readable even in the sun, clear voice directionsto my bluetooth headset (only a cheapo one),and I like the way it records your actual track for future reference, and the ability to plan routes on Google Maps/Basecamp.Nigel wrote:Used to have one as a cheap solution and they are OK but as you say glare can be a real problem and trying to get the touch screen to work can be a pain, also tended to get condensation.

I'm starting to sound like a record now but....
I use an old car one without a case and so far it's been fine, did get very wet last year in the Black Forest but kept working somehow. It's mounted behind my screen so most of the rain is kept off it.
It works for me because I replaced it with a new one so this was just sitting in a draw and it wouldn't be to bad if it stopped working.

By coincidence I tried my car satnav, tomtom, out last weekend on the bike. Had it in one of those zip up cases I bought off eBay attached to the handle bars. I did about 150 miles and it worked fine. Ok sometimes it was hard to see because of the direction of the sun but by either leaning forward a little or shading it with my hand I got on alright. I'm going on a long trip around Europe in August so wanted to make sure I don't need to buy a specialised satnav.

I've struggled with a car satnag, glare on the screen and condensation if put in a waterproof case or plastic bag.
So I bit the bullet and bought a Garmin zumo, all the advantages of a competent satnav designed for bike use that can also be used in the car.
Do yourself a favour and buy this, you won't regret it.

I use my ttgo 720 from my van on a ram holder and mount, tucked behind ky ktm adventure 990 screen.
Not had any issues with it, glare or using with gloves. I don't use it for sound in my van so don't miss it on the bike. It does have bluetooth though.
Only thing is not waterproof but ziplocks are.
Its up to date and about 6 years old now, when it dies I'll buy a Tomtom rider to use in the van :silly:

I use the Garmin 5" 1400 series car GPS's on my bikes.
Keep them bare with speaker & card hole taped over & tucked out the way behind the fly screen as near head up as possible.
Great viz from a 5" unit & can read all without glases.
