I went to buy a new bottle of Scottoil yesterday, the bloke in the shop was saying that the whole Scottoiler 'thing' has died - that no one buys them anymore. He wasn't sure why. Just that they used to keep 50 of them in stock, but now have less than 5. In terms of bottles, they had a small shelf with about 10 bottles (next to about 50 bottles of WD40!).

So, what gives? Is there a better alternative? Do people not bother? carry an aerosol? Buy new chains more often?

I wasn't aware that it had died, though it's certainly changed with the introduction of their electric (as opposed to vacuum) delivery systems.

It's easy to guess that more bods have bought into the whole 'Shaft drive Advenure' thing, which negates the need for an oiler and / or any basic chain maintenance at all, obviously.

Still a good bit if kit, no matter what.

I always use Scottoil in mine, because it washes off the tyre easily, which cannot be said for the "cheaper alternatives".

Plenty of Scottoil for sale on Fleabay.

There are much cheaper alternatives around now like Tutoro and PDOiler. The chain oiler market hasn't died, Scottoiler are going to die if they don't do something about their prices.

I bumped into Fraser Scott ,the owner of Scottoiller ,Fraser told me he had been using fs365 on his chain, maybe worth trying .cheers Al (thumbs)

Just a thought if any of you guys, fancy a tour of there factory maybe in conjunction with a camp w/end ,please let me know,iv known Fraser for of years ,a great guy. Anyone fancy that idea? Al (thumbs)

I agree with Ralph, I went for the Tutoro system, simple to install and a lot cheaper, no need to cut into the electrics or vac.

Any lubricant will work fine so long as it doesn't eat O' rings and is always there in sufficient quantity. The technology that goes into chain lube sprays is to make it stick to the chain, and not wash off in the rain, and not fling all over the rear wheel, because you need one spray to last several hundred miles. With a chain oiler delivering a constant supply, you're going to get fling whatever you use that's thin enough to run through the oiler, and the rest of the issues go away.
