For me it would be a DRZ400. Doesn't have to be the e model.
Enough power, reasonable price, £2500 should get you a good'un, tough, plenty still around and electric start. Get one set up nicely and they are great fun.
It's the kind of bike that you can learn on, then when you get into the swing it's got enough shove to keep you interested.

TTR250, DR350 and DRZ are about the best you will find. All will happily lug you through anything on a green lane. TTR is the lightest I think, DRZ was a bit heavy for me but the engine is super. DR350 ticks all the boxes and mime makes me so happy whenever I see it.

Of if you want newer and slightly more mad there is the WR250R.

Is this a current bike question? Or the best vintage bike?
mine would be crf450x does this count, it has been in production for 10 years. Am not a ktm fan but for trail work the freeride has to be a contender, very light an low, high top gear for road work, shame its not red.
agree drzs great too.

Having had a TTR and now a DRZ I would say the DRZ as its a really good all round bike for long days and if you need to road it back easily exceeds legal speeds. I go green laning every weekend and yes the DRZ is heavier but still easy to ride with a great engine.

They are good enough to pack some gear then go on a green laning weekend camping. I get about 90 miles to a tank plus the engines are easy to fix if needed. DRZ over the TTR for me although the TTR is a great bike. The S model I have also has indicators and a digi speedo etc so good for road use when you have to.
