125cc Trail Riders

Hi all, theres one question I have been meaning to ask, does anybody do a bit of off roading but on a 125? As far as I know, I don't know anybody else who is brave enough to try it :laugh: Mind you most of them don't because its their first bike so I would let them off I've got a Honda XR 125 which is surprising good on the lanes considering its only 11BHP. My old man Stewie thinks its a blast! :woohoo:

The fact is I see bikes like Kawasaki KMX 125s, Yamaha DT125s and WR125x on the road but never on the trails I sometimes feel like I'm the odd one out of a group of people on big 450s but that doesn't bother me anyway :laugh: Always like to go out for a laugh and to get muddy of course (thumbs).

Just curious thats all

Nothing wrong with a 125, I've got a dr125 in my workshop that I'm hoping to add the finishing touches to (such as suspension, wheels, exhaust, tank, carb) this winter. When finished it should weigh less than 100kg

Motorbikers like power so go for the big bikes I guess...

I used to off-road a crm125 great bike but the suspension let it down offroad

I was tempted to look at a Yamaha DT125. Thought that would be the ultimate machine for just about anything on the trails. Don't really trust two strokes - Not like what happened to my first bike (Gilera GSM 50) when the piston seized on the carriageway! hmy:

I think 125s make excellent trail bikes, lightish lowish easy going and low impact not to mention good tank range due to being low thirst and reliable.
Serrow type bikes make great trailies but for me an xr/dr/xt/dt/kmx 125 is almost as good
Oh and of course the derby is maybe better with the fairing as lanes become further apart

Did most of my trail riding on an MTX 125, great bike that did 40K miles with me.
It was mainly me and my mates, all on 125's that went out together, I think the biggest bike used to be a mate on his XL185s re-registered as a 125, he eventually got caught when a copper stopped him who was clued up on the XL's and knew straight away it was a 185.

I still have bits of my old MTX, bought it new in 1984? for £1000, recently saw one for sale on ebay for £1000 :blink:

I started my trail-riding (34 years ago!!) on a XL185 but it had 125 stickers on it for 'technical reasons'. I have wanted to get a DT125R for a while now but they are all either shagged or go for silly money otherwise I would be a 125 rider again.

My wife's first bike was a black DT125R, it had the power valve motor fitted and could do a genuine 90+ on the flat.
The only trouble with them was the steel wheels and a few other bits made them very heavy.
The KMX125 was a good bike but I did see a few broken motors due to main bearing failure.
