Morning Spud, I allways have a map in the tankbag, I enjoy the overview and so easy to plan a route.
Best place I've found for maps is the Map shop in Upton on Severn, maps for everywhere, plus a nice place to visit. ;)

I try and pick up last years big book maps (uk & europe) on the cheap and just cut out what I need. I have a huge box of used pages with highlighter of all the routes ive travelled and every time I go across Europe I try and use a new route. I only started with satnav last year but still prefer my maps.
cheers Marc

+1 To all the above, belt and braces as it were, Sat Nav is fine but what if it goes AWOL, or breaks down?

The sat nav's great for telling you whether to go left or right at the next junction but you're on any sort of trip you do need a map for the overview. I've got enough of them built up here over the years just to take whatever's appropriate - some inch thick book thing if I'm going in the car or a fold up "all of France on an A3 sheet" map on the bike. I normally use it just to decide where I'm going to set the sat-nav to next so it doesn't need to be visible in the tank bag while I'm riding.

Worked well when I was coming back through France last year during the fuel strikes. The map gave me an overview of the best detour route to Germany to buy some fuel and the sat-nav did the detailed planning. You can do it on the sat-nav screen by zooming the map out but a paper map is a lot easier and quicker.

I normally go to Stanfords in London for my specialist map supplies. Never been to the Upton-on-Severn shop - anyone know both and do a comparison?

I trust my zumo but for backups I have paper maps and this is my recommendation to get them from, http://www.mapsman.com/index.php :)

Absolutely belt and braces for me as well; ive got a uk spiral bound one (from the folks that make the A to Z) and a waterproof Motrax European one that i got a few years ago, both sized a wee bit larger than A5 so a good size for the tank bag.

Yep, maps as well – my sense of direction is so poor I need all the help I can get. Even if the GPS and maps agree I'll still end up going the wrong way (it's legendary).

Current tip is to get yourself down Halfords as they're doing a special price of £2.99 on the 2011 big A3 road atlas (4 mile - 1 inch scale) which is perfect as you can pop the staples out and just take the pages you want. It's usually £6.99

I bought one to permanently mark out the complete route for my trip in June – at that price I'm tempted to get a couple more for future use
In June this year I undertook the whole Nature Rally in one trip, in aid of Riders for Health
