Was interested to see what it said about wheel bearing play.

Very vague, just talks about excessive play.

Some time ago, probably the 1970's, the bike service manuals specified an allowable level of play in the wheel bearings.

Some garages will fail the bike if there is any play.

I notice there is no mention of the size of the reg plate, just that it has to be readable at 15 metres... So what does it mean to have an illegal plate?

Would it be possible to put this on a sticky thread for people like me that are useless with computers?

Re Illegal plates etc.
What must be remember is that the issuing of an MOT test certificate does not mean a vehicle is in compliance with legislation all it is doing is confirming that at the time the vehicle was tested it complied with the testers manual.
As regards numberplate there is very detailed legislation concerning this if you want to read it type into google:
Statutory Instrument 2001 No561
This gives you everything you need to know.

It's worth having this document saved somewhere.

I was advised that one of my bikes a few years ago was going to fail the test as the disc and pads had 'excessive' wear, when I asked what were the measurements of said brakes they were within the tolerances quoted in the manual, when I pointed this out the service manager coughed and spluttered a bit and downgraded it to an advisory.

Works on cars too.

A lot of that manual is missing mate

I tried to attach a PDF of the current one but it won't work.. I can mail it to people on request.

This is available also from the VOSA website. It's public information. Downloadable as a PDF.
