Polly and I saw this topic on my mobile but we've only just got home to reply properly. In the meantime so many moving tributes and messages make my little bit sound rather feeble.
We met Brian just twice but both for quite a while. Firstly he came several days early to the HISS meeting in 2012 and he and I had some great ride outs together here in the Pyrenees and we also spent a happy morning servicing my bike - his patience and tact showing a mechanical munchkin like me a few 'tricks of the trade' really summed up the man; a genuine enthusiast who was always willing to share his knowledge and skills - including Spanish cookery, which he loved*! - with an impish sense of humour that I often saw in some of his apparently waspish posts on topics about which he knew a very great deal and just let people dig themselves into some very deep holes- you guys know who you are
After that first HISS it was with Brian's encouragement the we devised the second one in Aragón, and we were going to meet there and explore the trails together but the Brittany Ferry's strike put the kibosh on that plan - Brian was also generous enough to offer me a free kip in his twin bedded room in Santander, where he was going to the MC Piston rally on the way down.
Then we met again last year, once more in the Pyrenees, while he was on a road tour of Spain, taking a break for long enough for his mate Tony to get stung to death by a
rash of mosquitoes! He was one of the most encouraging contacts we had in setting up our biking business and we planned a twin-shock mini-HISS for this June with a few of his buddies. They are now in touch, thanks to Jordi at Camping Collegats, and keen to carry on with this plan - not least a sort of 'memorial'.
Meanwhile Polly and I have spent more than a few hours remembering some fine times - always laughter but tinged with great sadness. You were a very special man, Brian, I'm proud to have known you ...
