Most of us bikers don't operate in the real world otherwise there wouldn't be a market for most of the bikes we ride :whistle:

Like a few others on here, I'm of the opinion that no security device will foil a determined scum bag so don't spend too much time on the details of what may or may not be better but rather go for a deterrent/delayer for the less well equipped passing scrote. I have a few bikes and when in my garage or (very secure) lock-up I use the heavy duty Lidl/Aldi chain & locks. I do have a disc lock I use occasionally, again mainly as a deterrent, when I'm away overnight with a bike but just realised haven't bothered with even that on my last few trips.

just out of curiosity, mostly, (plus I fancied another cheap u-lock)I ordered the cheapy £16 lock and chain.

it just arrived from m and p.
it is IDENTICAL to the £30 item I bought (some of these same items are for sale at nearly £50)

the lock is the same all round but with slightly different writing on, but both are marked `oxford`.

the chain looks identical .. even has the `oxford` name on it ... but is just one link shorter, as is advertised as 1400 long not the 1500

Then I would attach the alarm to the chain.

If a scrote wanted to take the bike the grinder would be making a racket at the same time as the alarm. Sparks flying everywhere.

Even then if they want the bike they'll get it.

thats the fella i have with a high viz sleeve, goes through the gs swinging arm n wheel a treat and wraps up around the seat and rear light when not in use with the lock attached

just a tip if you park in a regular place never leave yer chain behind locked to sumat solid esp the plastic covered ones, it wont be the first time scum will cut the chain in the small hours and slip the plastic back to cover the damage and slip the links when you park n leave yer bike

that abus granite chain and lock look the business alright. and yes, if it was parked next to mine attached to your bike, then my bike would be the one they (them scroties) would go for.

but for most purposes most low level removal operatives may be put off by a hd chain as they wont really know its not all that good? and go onto my best mates bike parked even further along, as he has invested his hard earned in a peedly ickle cable lock. (what are mates for eh?)

so as a medium deterrent my cheepy £16 lock n chain may be almost as effective, as a pro will take what he wants anyway .. its just that mine is £240 cheaper.

perhaps what Mike means is that an honest person walking past a chained and locked bike would think that that vehicle is secure, and not even think or attempt to steal it? .. because its locked up! ?

ie ... the chain is to deter honest people passing by .. which is a contradiction, of course.


it is the same as `laws` are to deter honest people from breaking them, and for them to be under the illusion that the government is protecting them, and therefor they are safe?


in the same way .. no-entry type signs on open land like commons, or on some trails, are for the honest law-abiding rider.

((it seems that these signs are also set up by people like the national parks associations as a background excuse for false prosecutions, as they are exceeding their actual legal authority ..... but that's another thread.))




.. so ... to summarise ... its all a fekkin con, mate. ha ha.

the chain manufacturers make chains and locks to the lowest cost effective standard that will sell .. sometimes parading the chains as HD effective etc when they are not high quality, while others hike the price to give the impression of super duper performance but may be simply heat treated alloys like the rest of em. it is mosly the thickness that gives robustness, but that means weight, so serious mobile security is difficult.

.. all the items are virtually useless if the theif is given opportunity and time ..
.. we all think that five minutes resistance in a car park will deter a thief and alert the public .. but the public don't give a toss or a frightened and will pass by ..

.. imobilisers (ignition type) will not stop a thief from pushing your bike into a van ..

the public, in a car park, will see a chain and lock and think that the vehicle is worth pinching and may suddenly become dishonest or `phone a friend` ..


the government don't give a toss if you bike is stolen, and is actually making money from it by the revenue (taxes) made from the claims, new business (tax) from new vehicles, parts etc .. the thief is their friend!
the govt wil put signs up apparently to deter thieves, but they are to give honest people the idea that theft is lucrative and they should enter the govt tax market opportunity .
it is the dozy punters like us, the wage slaves, that fall for all this, and keep paying our slave wages for the govt to protect us, for the security manufacturers to provide us with safety, while in fact it is all a fabulous tax ploy.!
