Cheers Steve, I'm gonna download some Talkytoaster items to see how I get on with those first, but will bear those DVD's in mind .

Don't mess about with talkytoaster, go straight to http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ and download whatever worldwide routable maps you need. Learn how to use http://www.javawa.nl/gmtk_en.html and Garmin Basecamp (no where near as bad as some would have you believe) and you will have the best free garmin compatible maps available.

I had a look at the openstreet mapping 2 years ago and while it's very good I did find a couple of instances where there should have been a T junction (and was shown as such on the Garmin maps) didn't as there was a gap between the vertical bit of the T, so, using it for route planning , and I'd guess, routing while there would bring up some "interesting" routes.

It does still throw up some odd routes due to mapping glitches but for the "price" I find it no great inconvenience to work round that, especially if planning routes on the computer first.
The latest couple of updates to Garmin's maps have introduced some routing problems of their own so it's always best to check the route first whichever maps you're using.
The more people who use and contribute to the openstreet mapping the better it will get.

Has anybody tried to put two maps on one SD card and switch between them from the unit ??

I have OS maps on Garmin's original SD card and was thinking of putting on the same card CN ?? Is it doable, or Garmin's SD card is somehow protected i.e. nothing can be addedd onto it?

I know I cannot copy it other way round OS --> other card.

Don't do it!

If you try to put anything else on the genuine Garmin OS card you'll wipe the OS maps. Same goes for all Garmin micro SDs.

Try the UK map from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ there are a few bits of green lane missing but use it in conjunction with the Garmin OS to plan routes and you'll have routable guidance on your GPS rather than just a line to follow.

Think you will find the garmin gb os mapping as long as its version 2 has already got citynavigator full uk loaded....you just need to activate that cn mapping on satnav...

You can buy cheaply the full europe citynav non locked version on the net...then get a unlocked then install that on satnav hard drive.and use garmin os card in slot....works for others......

Look up ioffer its safe and similar to ebay lol...
