I like them and will continue to attend them, as often as I can. As with many, it is an availability thing for me.
Sometimes I have to travel quite a way to get to one, or return, or both - which is why I personally don't tend to look for much going on at the rally itself. I prefer to kick back, chew fat, kick tyres and so forth with some good people.
All of those I've been to over the years have offered something different based on their location usually, and also a range of options in terms of activity. If you want more, why not make your own fun?
Heading to the HISS in a few days to kick back, chew fat, kick tyres and so forth with some good people, again!

It'd need to be a very small field with a very small number of people in it not to be able to avoid someone if you felt like that-Ralph- wrote:A few of the posts already on here may explain things. I'm on tapa talk, is it page 4 yet? There may be individuals on the forum who people feel they would rather not meet, hence staying away from the rallies.

I love Rallies, but to be honest I'm a coward on cold and wet weather, but also ifound that its nice to be in one place for a night oh two, and have lots of beer and a ride out oh two, and talk about the day just gone by.
But I would like to see a proper Rallie, one that starts on point A and finish 3 oh 4 days later at point B, I think that those are the ones that are more exciting and you tend to see more of the place you visit.
Just my two pence of bad wisdom. (thumbs)

Are ABR Rallies a thing of the past ?
Having organised my first ABR rally this year, The Countrymen at Haggsbank, I will confess it's not easy trying to please everyone! There were lots of emails and telephone calls between me and Danny to pull it together. Decisions about what food to put on and ride outs. But having broken my cherry Danny and I are keen to organise it again for next year once we've sorted out with Paul when he's hosting The Boil.

Well you my ask about the paddy Dakar it's PaulinBont he lets you cook your food then comes along and eats it or tells others members you are doing food what a nice man

Interesting idea that. 4 days is quite an undertaking though with the routes and the overnights, what would you pay for something like that?ReaperX wrote:I love Rallies, but to be honest I'm a coward on cold and wet weather, but also ifound that its nice to be in one place for a night oh two, and have lots of beer and a ride out oh two, and talk about the day just gone by.

I can only speak for the Taffy Dakar.Mike54 wrote:What makes the taffy / paddy Dakar good?
I did the 2014 event.
Good venue Camp site attached to a Pub which also did good food.
Chuck Wagon Breakfast was fair.
Toilets & Showers. Good Ground.
Day 1.
Orienteering list of way points with access via Lanes & roads. Riders take their pick of lanes & roads whichever suits & do waypoints in whichever order they want.
Day2.
Local knowledge riders lead, small groups green laneing with Tough or Moderate terrain. Lasted all day with a break for a pub lunch.
Great countryside with very varied terrain.
Great bunch of people running it.
Now gets very quickly oversubscribed because of the quality of the event which caters for most levels of riders.
Value for money event with decent Goody Sack.
All the AJP's were on site to view & maybe test ride.
CCM 450GP prototype was there.
Lightness is everything.
Lightness with Grunt is a Scratcher!
An Adventure is not a tank transfer.

Re: Are ABR Rallies a thing of the past ?
I'm just back from Ullapool and it was alright but I don't know if I would bother going again.I only went for Saturday night as the weather was crap on Friday and I didn't fancy a 3 hour run after work. When I got there I chatted to a few folk but the funny thing is most of them weren't regular posters on here but then everyone went away to get something to eat.I think the problem with Ullapool is that there is too much choice of hotels to go to.Unless you're already in with a crowd it's harder to meet up with others than if a rally was just based at one pub.I then came back to the campsite and there was only one other person standing around to speak to so it was into my tent with my bottle of wine by 9:15.
I would probably have spoken to just as many people if I had been camping on my own.In fact the longest chat I had all weekend was with an Irish couple on a Blackbird in Durness.

Re: Are ABR Rallies a thing of the past ?
That's the problem with most ABR rallies no central meeting point you turn up pay your money and that's it ... Be as well just going camping with your mates ... One more reason why it's not working ... Why do we still call them ABR rallies, why not just call the the boil rally and the countryman rally and put it out there .. For everyone to attend off a couple of forums ...sprintster wrote:I'm just back from Ullapool and it was alright but I don't know if I would bother going again.I only went for Saturday night as the weather was crap on Friday and I didn't fancy a 3 hour run after work. When I got there I chatted to a few folk but the funny thing is most of them weren't regular posters on here but then everyone went away to get something to eat.I think the problem with Ullapool is that there is too much choice of hotels to go to.Unless you're already in with a crowd it's hard to meet up with others than if a rally was just based at one pub.I then came back to the campsite and there was only one other person standing around to speak to so it was into my tent with my bottle of wine by 9:15.
