Is There A Reason No One Rides A BMW Sertao?

A very rare (only one I have seen) fault caused by the owner, who pushed a bike too far with a broken shock

Did he sell the bike, nope?

He bought a Wilbers shock and fitted a new swingarm and has continued to ride and own the bike

So, what does your pic prove?

Nothing?

I wasn't trying to 'prove' anything. I was just highlighting some serious failures of components that really shouldn't be failing and that's why I won't be riding a BMW.
I'm sure the majority of BMW bikes out there which will happily continue to give their owners years of service. I always do plenty of research when buying a new bike and these failures are stepping over a safety line which shouldn't be crossed.

Agreed. No bike is perfect and, as you state, have 'shortcomings'. Sometimes I even have to change the tyres on my bike!!

So I'm down to a choice of two bikes for that first big bike, the Sertao or the Enfield. That's a gulf as wide as the Pacific between the two. The head says Beemer, the heart says the Royal. The mates of course say "hurry up and take your test".

Is there any Sertao / Enfield owners about who could let you have a play? To see how they feel to you?

Never ridden one but have had several larger BMW's. My findings are that they are 'still' asking BMW prices for machines that don't have the build quality of the older units. Don't know if the reason is, the machines are no longer produced in Germany so quality control might not be so strict? (this is what I've been told).
Perhaps production costs have been reduced to maximise profits?
Please, feel free to correct me If I'm wrong but IMO, modern units do not have the build quality of the early models.
On my last machine, I had flaking of the dif surface (last two bikes), rust in frame joints, split seat, intermittent electrical issues.. All this on a bike just over eighteen months old!

you already have the perfect adventure bike, so go for the enfield

1150 is the newest boxer I'd run, Xcountry is simple like the older ones though
