i bought my super tenere, with 0 miles on her, the guys at the YAMAHA shop told me to run her in gently for the first 600 miles, oil and filter change, then a few more hundred, oil and filter change, then gooooo.
i think mr YAMAHA probably knows a bit more than any of us here about running engines in.???
mines sweet as a nut after 26k and oil and filters ever 6k.

There maybe something in this thrashing an engine from new..... but I just cant bring myself to do that to a new bike. So I run em in by the book.

A copper won't ever tell you on the record that it's safe to speed, even though under the right circumstances he knows it absolutely is, because if you misinterpret that advice and crash while speeding under the wrong circumstances, you'll point the finger in his direction and say he told you it was safe.

I suspect Mr Yamaha does know more than any of us about running engines in, but just like the copper he tells us what he wants us to know, rather than everything he actually knows to be true. After all if he told us all to thrash it from day one, then somebody broke something in the process, then under the warranty he's liable for fixing it.

When you give instructions to the public you need to err on the side of caution, and allow for the lowest common denominator in common sense, intelligence, and mechanical sympathy.

On the plus side I have just done a deal on a brand new one for not a lot more money....very happy camper.
So this thread has been a complete waste of time then

Only joking, I've been reading this thread and different opinions on running in with great interest.

Good news on the new bike, when d'ya get it?

that reminds me of a friend of mine, wild man he is, mad for speed

anyway, he bought a new bike a few years ago, first new bike he ever had, and I dropped him into shop to pick the bike up,

so he was told something the same as you about going gently for the first 600 miles or something like that, I cant remember what it was, but it was something like that,

so he sat on the bike and pulled out on the road, and went from 0 to 150 mph in about 10 seconds :P

the man in the shop his jaw dropped, so it did :P

Glad you bought a NEW one,iv'e run in every single bike iv'e had in nearly 40yrs of riding to the letter and not 1 has ever drank a drop of oil and was always better mpg than other peoples,so run it in for the full 1000mls.Just bought a new bike 3 months ago,4000rpm was only 55mph and it is a really revvy bike so wanted to go but did the full 1000mls now I am getting 5mpg more than anybody else on the owners forum.
