Dont want to piss on anyone's fireworks, but much prefer RD350a to the 400, proper good bike would keep up with most things in its day....just saying.

a mate had an air-cooled RD350, back in the day. Good quick bike and reliable too. Closer perhaps to the racer than the 400 was.

That's the one Richard, went like stink, and looked the part. Always liked the YR5, but alas only twin leading shoes up front. Big brother to YDS7 250.

The 400 was a bit more sports/tourer, while the 350 was more 'sport' for sure. Frame design very close to the air-cooled TZ's but with more brackets and different forks and steering angle.

A biker mate of mine once owned a beautiful condition Yamaha YPVS 500cc V4 2-stroke, oh my, such a superb machine.

Unfortunately some scumbag stole it.

Probably quite rare to find now, but if I'd the money I'd have one of those...... SUPERB!!!!

Over my 50+ years of bikes I have owned very few 2 strokes, some prewar Scotts 2 and 3 speed, some mopeds including a Phillips Gadabout my 1st bike, passed my test on it , some Puch 50's, a Benelli 250 twin and
a Yamaha RD500

Sold it many years ago (20?) it is still in the local area.

The Scott was one of the most amazing bikes, ever...a water-cooled two-stroke twin...the engine was still to be found, heavily modified, in the Silk, in the 1970s.

I never rode one of those. Just goes to show much OLDER you are then me, Steve. Where did you put the coal?

I always lusted after the Suzuki "kettle". I had one on order when they first came out but after waiting for a couple of months, the dealer just couldn't get one delivered, I bought a 750 Honda 4 instead. I've owned several "strokers" and always preferred them to 4 strokes when I was a lad. The Kwaka 500 3 cylinder was an exciting bike to ride but because of its short wheelbase was prone to flipping if you weren't careful on the throttle. In my opinion the Suzuki T500 twin was one of the best all round bikes in its day. Very reliable, decent performance and handling and not too bad on petrol consumption. Although they didn't have the same "wow" factor as some bikes mentioned on here it would be my bike of choice if I was the OP.

T500 is currently my top choice too - really like the balanced look of the bike and the research confirms what you say about longevity and reliability. Here's one I'm considering ...
