Peru day 5-8. The detour
Peru day 5 to Huamachuco
Another long day. First part was easy and nice. Than came the rain and fog. At the same time as a the road got very bad. 60 km that took over 3 hours to ride. The holes on the road shaken me and the bike. And the hairpins in rains on this rod made me very tired.
But not this guy was happy. He was out on his daily ride with the family.
Holding his har with his elbow. And a smile in his face

The detour
Peru day 6-8 Detour to the coast
I decided to make a detour to the Pan American.
1) I was very tired of these pothole roads.
2) In front of me I had one one 15 most dangerous roads in the world. Balcony road. Narrow. No protections, And a huge amount of tunnels, Red part in picture.
Instead I get one leg over the mountains, down to the coast, 4 hours along the coast. And a new day climbing the mountains.
Day 6
It was nice road that climbed to 4 200 m. With only 13 km left to the coast. So 4 km down in 13 km driving. Ended in Truijillo. I found a very nice place to sleep.

Pan Am
Day 7
4 hours of boring ride on the Pan Am. Dry, dirty, dust, traffic jam and some parts of nice highway.
The best of the day was the coffee stop. With this woman.
We had along talk about my trip and ....

Back to the mountains
Day 8
A new day of hill climbing Rather slow start, But then it went right up into the fog and rain. But I came out on the other side Again at 4 200 m. Approaching. Huaraz. At 3 050 m,
So nice roads. I don't think that I ever have ridden so many hair pins. The Himalayan did an excellent job.
Day 9
I stayed in Huaraz. To get used to the altitude. Refill liquid in the body and plan for the continuation

Peru day 8-9 Altiplano Huaraz to Huanuco
Peru day 8-9 Altiplano Huaraz to Huanuco
I looked at google map. And it should take to long time for one day.
I asked the guy in the reception about the road. No problem. You can do it in one day. Pista all the way. Only few small parts without tarmac.
But I saw that the last part should be slow. So I planned for two days of riding.
If it is a good road, than the time is due to a very twisty road
Day 8.
It was a very nice ride. On twisty tarmac roads, Climbing high in the mountains. Witch spectacular views. The peak was at 4 200 meters. That is serious.
The town were I stayed for night was Huallanca. 3 500 m.
4th floor to carry the bag up! Lack of oxygen.

Peru day 8-9 Altiplano Huaraz to Huanuco
Day 9.
It was rainy heavy during the night. But it had stopped in the morning. Maybe that contributed to this days efforts. Riding time according to Google Maps = 5 hours
I just reached the border of town when the first road building started.
Then it was more or less 156 km of construction and damaged road for the rest of the day.
It was wet and muddy in some places. From which I have pictures. Very narrow road without protection to fall down many hundreds of meters. End of story. No pictures. I can't stay at those parts. And I had all efforts concentrated on riding.
Tarmac part after land slide and falling rocks: No cruising tarmac roads in the mountains today. This was the hardest part I have ridden. Including the Trampolin of Devil. Twice the length and worse road conditions. But the road is not used by any tourists. So it is not known
I arrived in Huanaco after 8 hours.
1 900 m. Almost sea level.
So the Altiplano is more or less over. I thought. But...I have one more leg planned in the mountains, close to the jungle.
Today I need to rest, so I have time to update this story.
I asked again for road conditions for next leg. This guy was more honest. He said; So and so. Dependent on how much it has been raining. But should be more or less tarmac. Even with variation of status.

Day 13 to 5: In the mountains towards the jungle.
First of all Merry Christmas to all of you. Today' as II am writing ths, it is 25/12. I have a rest day in Pucallpa.
I was in Huanuco. It was time for decision. Going NE towards the jungle and Ecuador? Or continue south, before going even longer into the jungle on the way north? I decided on the last alternative.
This was the route to Pucallpa. The most eastern place on my route. Via Tarma, that was the most southern place.
They told me that the roads would be good but that it would rain a lot. They where 50% correct and 50 % wrong.
