Versys 650,ive had both,Mk2 for 4yrs & i'm now riding the Mk3 which ive had for 18mnths,been all over on it and given it some abuse,i'll dig out a video,great reliable bikes,you could pick a fully farkled up Mk2 for £3000.

Honda CB500Xs can be had for less than £3K. They do 80 mpg, and you can use the money saved to upgrade the suspension etc.
I've been looking at those actually; really good value bike, it just looks like it needs a good bit of money spent on it before you can even think of taking it off-road! With the Rally Raid kit though, it looks like a really decent mini Africa Twin.

buy one for £3k, then it costs another £3k to get it up to the sort of performance of the used KTM 690 enduro that you could buy for the same dosh.
But, it's arguably a better bike than the 690 in terms of comfort and economy, plus you'd probably need to spend a bit on the 690 to get it how you wanted it, then put a bit aside to hedge against the various mechanical gremlins that some 690s are prone to.

XT's looks a brilliantly capable bike, but I do need to (more than occasionally) carry a pillion passenger in relative comfot, hence why the CB500X, the Tenere or indeed another BMer are looking ideal.
